Can't get it to sound like a Harley. Harley- V twin. XJ- 4 cylinder in line. Think of the way an in-line 6 cylinder engine sounds so much different from a V8. You can make all of the changes possible to the exhaust system on a 6 cyl and it just can't sound like a V8. In addition to the cylinder config. Your bike turns more than 2X as many RPM'S as a Harley. You can't mask the RPM's no matter what you try.

There are after market exhausts available but from what I've read on this forum they are either a pain to tune, jet changes, plug chops, etc. For not much return on your investment. It seems like changing the tips (after the collector) seems to work. There are folks who use Harley tips on otherwise stock exhaust who like the sound. It doesn't sound like a Harley it just has a deeper sound.

Good luck finding what trips your trigger! There are a lot of options out there. Be careful, new exhaust can create a lot of tuning work for you.

the closest you will get to a harley sound, would be to use harley pipes, and 4-2 exhaust headers. the longer the pipe length the deeper the tone will be. keep the rpms LOW, once you break the 4000rpm mark its going to sound like a screamer!

hopefully in the next week or so i will have an audio clip i can post up, im working on a custom 4-1 pipe that i think is going to sound unique and somewhat "angry".

I would love to do a custom exhausts, but it would probably be wise to get the girl running first.

I have a 4-1 exhaust on my 650 maxim, no baffles, a little restriction at the tip of the muffler for a little back pressure. Sounds really wicked.

restriction is bad! velocity is good!

long pipes will make the tone deeper.

the harley sportster mufflers had a prominent but legal and reasonable noise level.

Thats pretty neat. Yeah, i guess changin the tips is pretty sensible. Not TOO tough to do and it'll save you all that time in fine tuning.

I have a 4-1 on my 900 with a shorty pipe. Sounds great up to about 4500 revs. I don't want to take it any farther because it screams so much I think I'm hurting her! At least it keeps me from cranking on it!

Old bike=low revs and everyone keeps smiling :)

ok, here is my half done exhaust. needs to be coated and wrapped in ceramic header wrap. I KNOW THE BIKE RUNS LIKE CRAP. i will worry about that when i am re-assembling.

Ive posted it before, but my bike came with 2in1 turnout mufflers, I did the following video to hear it after cleaning and sync'ing the carbs

    http://s33.photobucket.com/albums/d62/D ... 200003.flv

And in thought, yes the XJ does run about twice the rpms of a Hardly.....so if you channel all 4 cylinders through a single exhaust....wouldnt that tend to make the sound of each cylinder walker over the previous one...therefore losing the *bub bub bub* common on a twin?

*Not explaining this well I know....*
