I've always had a hard time with the mirrors in my XJ650RJ. I can only get a decent view of my elbows. The mirrors I have look stock, but might not be. Has anyone else had this problem? I checked BikeBandit and a new set is like $85 so I don't want to buy them only to find out that they're no better. Anyone found any replacement mirrors that work particularly well?

    Thanks,
    Greg

I'm doing a bit of mirror hunting myself.

Since I lowered my bars and took them in by about 4", I can only see whats directly behind me if I move to look...no good.

I'm looking for something with a shape similar to my gastank, teardrop I guess you could say. I'll keep you posted if I find anything that works out for me.

Btw, I'm currently using the stock xj750 mirrors, just a as point of reference.

Did you change your controls as well Hessenr00ts? on the 650 maxim controls they are angled in (to compensate for the curved buckhorn bars) - using a flat bar with the maxim mean the mirrors were tipped inward maybe 20 degrees.

I just lived with being blind... doing what you're doing now to see... it wasn't perfect.

Bar end mirror, clamp on mirrors, or bend the stalk of your mirrors to a flatter angle. I might have a few spare mirror stalks in my basement (broke a few mirrors in my day)

Nope, same controls. I did notice the small slant on my stock bars as well.

I've been dealing with it for the most part, no real problems. I was planning on changing the mirrors anyway, now I just need to be sure I find something with a slightly sharper bend in the stem and i'll be good.

I was told to look at the vmax... I also thought about putting my spare stems in the vice... setting an angle on the bench and giving it a few soft rubber mallot wallops. A few degrees would change everything.

I'm heading to my fathers workshop this weekend for a visit...I'll try that on the stock ones and see how it goes.

I've got one spare laying around, I'll test it on that first :p

Do a full report - if you go softly I'd think it would be fine...

Hammers have long been my favorite modding tool for all sorts of things, not just vehicles...

I'll snap some pics and post the outcome on Sunday night

On both my present 650 Seca & the one I had years ago I extended the stock mirror stalks where they bolt to the mirror heads. I used 10mm bolts about 1.5" long, cut the heads off, threaded that end & used nuts & red loctite to thread them together. Yes it is not pretty, yes the mirrors do vibrate more but now I can see that something is there other than my elbows. I have stock bars.

Thats certainly one way of doing it :D

Pretty doesn't totally matter, as long as it works! Especially when safety is involved.

Thanks, not bad at all. I don't notice any distortion. The bracket is from hard steel.

So now I'm looking at these....I'm buying new grips this week so I'd want something that allows these to fit onto the bars as well.

    Any suggestions?

I had the same problem on my Seca 550 after I changed to shorter bars. I ended up with a set of OEM replacement mirrors for a VMax from EMGO.

They are chrome teardrop style mirrors similar to those on my VStar 1100 but the stems are longer.

You can get them from Dennis Kirk. I bought mine at a local bike shop for $19 each.
