well i have a cylinder head gasket on the way and i was looking for some advice on how to take the timing chain off so i can remove the head. ive never done this myself, ive seen it done before, and im mechnicaly inclined so hopefully this wont be to much of a task. i kinda dont wanna take the heads apart so i was thinkin maybe pop the chain open. or if that would be more work than takin out the cams. and if anybody knows what the torque of the head bolts are. and if you think i should take the cams out what that torque is too.

also. i cant find a thred on timing my bike (xj700) so if anybody knows whare its at or would even like to post a quicky here any advice is much. and if i pop the chain i dont think i have to retime it? everybodys advice is much appriciated.

Oldskoo11, if you can possibly swing it get a manual. The factory manual is my favorite but if too expensive then a Clymers. I t will make your job so much easier as this operation is described in detail. I actually get information from my Maxim factory book and use it on my Honda Silverwing. Specifically generic torque values for different size nuts/bolts. My Honda book doesn't have them the Yamaha book does.

Yeah, you really need a book for this one. I'm pretty sure the camchain is "endless" so you'd have to 'break' it which is why the book has you remove the cams. The factory book (at least for the 550) insists it's EASIER if you don't break the chain.

If you do pull the cams, DO NOT mix up the cam (bearing) caps they only fit correctly in the spot they came from.
