hey i have a 1985 maxim 700 and when i went to start it yesterday it said that the bike was overheating within a minute of starting it so i flushed the radiator and put new antifreeze in it. then i drove it and it stopped saying it was overheating! but the bike kept trying to die on me like it was out of gas so i would restart it and keep driving just giving it more throttle. after about 20 min it stopped and i drove it for about an hour on freeway and everything with no issues. then when i went to start it today it would start right up but die after running a minute or less and when.so i took the pluggs out and they were fowled so i put new ones in now the bike will just turn over and back fire and when it does start it will only run for a couple of seconds. the battery runs down pretty quick so when i try to start it while jumping off car it will just keep turning like it is getting no gas or spark. i really need to get this fixed it is my everyday transportation. also the bike has no air filters on the ends of carbs will this hurt anything? where can i get a set for cheap?

They don't run well without the airbox. If you go with pods, that opens a whole other can of worms.

without air filter you might have sucked in all kinds of crap into the carbs. What do you have now? Just the carbs with no rubber stubs coming off the back end? If so, you need an airbox or individual air filters. Anything would be better than no filters at all. How was it running till now? If its your daily rider it must have been running okay till now.

    Good luck.

    Bummer...no air filtration at all.
    that's not good.

I might have a spare air-box I could sell you but you'd have to buy the boots (about $12 each plust clamps)

AND there is NO way to get the airbox into the frame without pulling the engine.

I was able to get my airbox in by just pulling the carbs and starter. Maybe I just got lucky. Mind you, it wasn't that easy.

Definitely would say sticking with the stock airbox is the way to go. Read a few of the posts about pods if you have any doubts.

I didn't try very hard on mine....I have heard other's say "no way"

One guy even took a heat gun to it and literally "squeezed" it in there.

It's good practice to drop the engine out every spring anyway :)

Get a spare engine and swap every year just to make sure it's all working fine!...Ok, that might not be very practical for most of us.

Jason09 - Daily transportation with no air filter? Sand or dirt can get in the "sliders" of the carbs, or the air bleeds, you gotta have a filter.
Some of the guys were kicking around an idea :

A trip to the hardware store, some rubber cement, you'll have a temporary set-up that's better than nothing.
