Hi guys. Cool site you have here.
I'm from Ireland and have recently bought a 1981 J650 Maxim which I am told was imported from the good ol' US of A 8) 8) .
If I give serial numbers and last known registration number in USA could anybody get me some history of my precious machine.

Someone may know of a way, but I have tried before and not had much luck. Carfax sometimes has motorcyle VINs, but it it hit or miss. There is another similar service, but it is hit and miss as well.

You can run the VIN here for free to see if it was listed as stolen or was a salvage bike while it was in the US.

In TX, if you pay $2, you can get the registration info if you appear in person to request it.

Wow, your bike looks pristine. I can give you a possible scenario of your bike's past: The PO was a lunatic about the bike and it's condition. Congrats :-D

Richie if you look in the XJfourever thread Chacal has a way to look at your VIN.
You can find out such things as where it was made, what # your bike was off the line ect.

Very beautiful bike in a lush green countryside setting. Your bike looks showroom new! Which leads me to ask: how many '81 Maxims did Yamaha build? It must be in the buhzillions as it seems like the vast majority of questions are about the 650 and it seems '81 and '82 are the most common.

Or maybe Yamaha is still building them and dropping them into places like Ireland as "used" bikes!

Very very nice job! I would never dream of criticizing your bike but there was a very nice picture of a restored XJ publishe recently that had the flange of the gas tank covered with gold colored trim that was absolutely stunning. The owner got the trim from Chacal, our local parts guru.

    Can anyone locate this picture?

Once again, beautiful bike/ beautiful part of the world.

Could be because they only made the Seca 650 in '82.
    Only one year.
It seems the 1100 was a short run too, like two years.

Thanks guys! I was riding the bike today and noticed a couple of times the rev counter needle jumping around slightly even though the bike was at a steady rev.....any ideas :? :?

    Clean out the cable.
Take it off the bike, pull the cable out of the sleeve.
I use carb cleaner, use your favorite solvent, squirt the inside of the sleeve, throughly douching it out.
Wipe down the cable, spray and clean it to.
Put the cable back in the sleeve.
I use a light machine oil at this point, some use motor oil, pour the oil into the sleeve until it drips from the bottom.
Put it back on the bike.
    This should help alot.
If you still have a jumping tach it might be the tach.
This stopped mine from swinging wildly to only freaking out when I'm WOT from the get go.
If it comes up at a normal rate it is fine.
