    Hey,

Has anyone tried coating thier cracked carb boots with Plasti-Dip? It should seal them, just wondering how well it would hold up.

    Later;

Did you dip part way up the wire? If so, how far up?

    This is a great idea!

What I did was brushed on the plasti dip. I tried dipping one but it got messy. I went from the base to the clamp area.

I think there was someone on the board that had tried this, and he said the overtime the plasti-dip seemed to disappear. I've heard the liquid electrical tape suggested in the same fix, but it seems that everyone stresses these methods to be temporary fixes. Let us know how it goes though, or how long it lasts... Might give someone the chance to save up enough pennies while they ride.

I tried the liquid electrial tape first because I couldn't find the dip. I was a joke and seemed to melt in contact with the gas.

I've had good luck packing the cracks with black ADHESIVE RTV silicone gasket sealer.

I used GOOP to seal the cracks in mine and painted them black with high heat paint.

Maybe a job for plastisol. That's the stuff that comes in those vinyl repair kits. It's a heat curing synthetic rubber.
T-shirt printers buy it by the gallon for shirt printing. It's also used in manufacturing for car carpets, that's what makes the carpet form to the shape of the floor pan.
Dirt cheap stuff too, usually cures at about 300ºF

It's available for about 19 bucks a quart on Ebay.

I'm going to pick some up for experiments.

i cant believe it took me this long to dream this up.... i am sitting here reading through the posts thinking to my self that wont work for one reason or another ... not heat resistant ... wont stand up to fuel... etc the light bulb comes on Fiberglass. fiberglass is heat resistant, can be shaped, will bond to rubber / plastic etc, can be sanded / drilled / painted, can be layered for added strength.... only one pitfall.... if you dont make it strong enough it will crack, easy fix 2 - 3 layers of fiber.

just some food for thought. fiberglass kits are $7.99 at the autoparts store

if somone has already tried this please chime in

Not sure about the glass idea. I think you would loose the flexibility of them and getting them on/off would become an issue.

I've used fiberglas to repair mufflers because the hotter it gets, the harder it will become. I'm not too keen on the idea of using it for sealing the intakes however. It may develop cracks in it over time and leave you back at square one again. I may be wrong and it's worth a try I guess.

I think fiberglass would crack out and leave you with the same problem. I like the plastic dip or the liquid electrical tape method. Remember that when you remove and install the carbs you put a bit of pressure on those boots. I didn't have carcks on the last 1100 I bought but just from removing the carbs now I do. A member out east wants it and I'm just going to get some new ones from sporting for less and put them in for the guy. He wants to fly in here and ride the bike home about 1300 miles. Don't know if they would fail or not. I would feel better about it if I were on the road for that long. Just my thoughts.

Mn-Maxims makes a good point (you da man!)
I didn't look at it that way, but it does make sense. When installing or removing the carbs, those boots will flex somewhat and end up cracking the fiberglas in time, unless you put it on ...real, real thick. I'd look at using something else instead.
