I took the bike out yesterday and no problems. I put about 50 miles on it. This morning when I got to work (not getting over 30mph for about 4 miles) there was gear oil coming out of the vent cap on the differential. Is the differential over filled?

I've read that this can happen when it's really cold out. The diff oil is thick like peanut butter. You're in VA...not far from me. It was 27F here this morning. How about you?

It was low 40's this morning when I took the bike out. I had no problem with this yesterday morning and it was only a few degree's difference.

    Have you filled recently?
Any reason to think it might be over filled?

No, I picked the bike up from a local shop here almost 2 months ago. I guess I need to go thru and service the entire bike. I don't have a manual on it so could anyone tell me what the fluid levels are suppose to be. I have looked for a manual but like everyone on here knows the 85 XJ700N Maxim is a hard to find anything bike.I have a couple of other issues with the bike but it is road worthy somewhat right now. I live on a military post so I have no garage to work on it.

Ft. Eustis doesn't have an auto-hobby shop? Nearly every post I've set foot on has one.

They have a shop but I have kids and my wife works as well so the time I have off is spent at home watching kids. While my wife is at work. I usually let the kids play in the park behind my house while I tinker on the bike in the backyard(which is prohibited). This makes it really hard to do anything time consuming. Like I said in a previous forum (when the sun goes down the garage is closed and the cover goes on the bike).

The rear end gets filled to the top of the fill hole.
The oil just below the top of the site glass.

Thank you for the info Hound. I will be doing a fluid change this weekend if it stops raining.

    hehe
    I just reread my post.
The bottom of the fill hole, you'd have a hell of a time trying to fill it to the top.
