OK, So I have the bike running but I cannot start it using the starter button. this bike has had this problem since right after I bought it.

I push the starter button and the low oil light lights up but it doesn't turn over. Every once in a while it will turn over without issue. If I jump the bike at the solinoid it turn over just fine. I do sometimes hear a clicking noise at the solinoid when pushing the button.

I have tried to order the xjcd with no response via e-mail. Can someone post the starting circuit? Do I need a new solinoid or does it run deeper?

Sounds like you have a problem with connections. I spent a few hours taking every single #&(*$%@ connection apart, using a nail file and small round file, filed all the oxidation off, then used a whole lot of of di-electric grease to coat them.
Take apart your starter botton and clean it as well, I was amazed at how much more brighter the lights were once the connections were cleaned up , it also turned over like I had a car battery hooked on it!
The clicking sound indicates not enough power is getting to the starter IMHO. :)

First thing I would do is charge the battery and check the alternator brushes. Next, clean out the starter button (that's right, pull the cluster apart and pull it out).
I would contact Dwayne Verhay at verhey@surenet.net. He'll get you set up or in touch. One or the other.

My 82 XJ550 (with 10K miles) also has a starting problem.
Started about 2 years ago and has slowly gotten worse.
Push the button and the oil light comes on and I hear a clicking somewhere around the battery area. USUALLY it eventually starts but as I have been getting her ready for this upcoming riding season, have only gotten her to start once. :( She did run great once she actually started.
I have not yet tried shorting the solenoid...
    Battery has a great charge.

    So where to from here...
I will remove and clean ALL connections in the starting path.
Clean/file and replace with some di-electric grease.

After that , well hopefully there wont be an after that :)

Sounds like a solenoid, but clean your connections first to rule that out.
