Already ordered drag bars for my retro jap commuter. Will these go right on without hitting the tank or will I need risers? Will mirrors need to be replaced or master cylinder? If you've done this to your maxim 650, can you give a few tips as to what I can expect?

How long are they? The only thing I noticed was that they are a tad narrow depending on the brand. I did notice that the master cylinder and mirror mounts are going to angle WAY in.

Here's what my bars ended up looking like:

THere was nothing rubbing/hitting, and like Quarterhorse said, the only downside, was that the master cylinder was angled, as were the mirror mounts.

Your bars are screaming for a quality set of bar-end mirrors which would fix the mirror issue. I had a set of very nice B-E mirrors on my Virago and LOVED them. I need to change the bars on my 650 but need to find a set with less turn in at the grips so that I can go to bar end mirrors.

It would be so nice to not see my freakin' shoulders in the mirrors.

Yeah, that's a good point. How do most bar-end mirrors mount? Are they the internal clamp thing? The only reason I ask, is because my grips extend a bit beyond the bars and I don;t really want to cut them down at all.

Thanks for posting a pic. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Now I'm really excited. $27 for dragbars from www.sportingforless.com. I bought my bike for $325 during the gas price hike and all it needed was carb cleaning and fluids etc. I altered the baffle in the Mac 4 into 1 pipe because it was too quiet with it, and way too loud without. Now it's perfect. Thank God for this website. It's instrumental in making even slight modifications.
    Thanks Everyone

You can make your own bar-end mirror mounts. I made some out of 3/4"pipe material. I just cut a short piece (about 1-1/2" long) at a 45 degree angle and used a 5/16" bolt to tighten it up from the end to hold it in place. The pipe pieces will bind when tightened and hold them from doing out. You can use that same bolt to mount the mirrors on also. It's so simple to do.

Sounds good, can you post pics, diagrams or more explicit directions? If just directions, I'll take pics for a DIY project while I do it.

I'll see if I can dig up those inserts I made and get a photos of them. They are so easy to make, it's sick.

bar end mirrors generally mounting using an internal expanding clamp that tightens against the inside of the bars. If you don't want to make your own you can get them pretty cheap.

Now those are as cheap as they get! Not bad either. A guy can hardly justify making them for that kinda price.

Pardon my ignitzishness but what are drag bars?

Here are the mirrors that were on my Virago when I got it. They were the best mirrors I have ever used for any application. Stuck out where they needed to be, rock steady, sturdy. They were awesome! I am planning to change the bars on my Maxim because the have a small crimp at a bend and when I do the new bars will have a pair of Napolean Bar End mirrors attached.

They are better than than the fairing mount mirrors on my Hondog.
