Can somebody please tell me if a 1985 engine will fit into my 1982 bike, and if the shaft from the 1982 model is interchangeable too ?

    I'm talking XJ750 here

The 85 engine is a 700cc and I've not heard of anyone making that kind of a swap. There are a lot of parts that will interchange between the two but, maybe someone else will chime in with a firm answer. I'm interested in the answer too. I'm finding that the 700cc engine has issues with availability of parts and, maybe the answer for my problems is a 750 in my frame. Somehow I kinda doubt that they will change without mods to the frame.

OK just noticed that you're in the UK, the answer might be completely different from what I was thinking. I'm not really sure what was available there in 85

AFAIK, the US was the only country that got 700s. No idea if the engine is interchangeable or not. I would be curious to know if it's aircooled or liquid cooled.

You need to post the engine "serial number" that is stamped onto the flat pad just behind and beside the clutch cover..........then we can identify what engine it is.
