Where do some people on Ebay get their prices from?
    Here is a perfect example.
Ebay price, guy must be on crack!

This same part is available from at least 12 other people on Ebay right now for less than $30.00

For $800 bucks I could by a good complete parts bike.

I know its a free market, but some people are just out in left field on what they are asking.
Maybe I am in the wrong business???

Considering the drive shaft is made of pure unobtainium, I'd say that's a pretty good deal...

But seriously... What drugs.. Where do I find?...

It's not even NEW. I got in an email 'spat' with a guy trying to sell an NOS 550 clutch cover for MORE than you CAN STILL GET THEM FOR from Yamaha, (which is a lot.) The going price for an XJ550 clutch cover in today's world is between $10 and $20 you can get them for that all day long. (I have.)

Some of these guys figure "I have this old part, and OMG look what it cost new. I'll sell it for half that." Without realizing there is a relatively thriving ongoing "flea market" that at least 4600 of us know about. I don' 'spect he's gonna get many bids...

I really like the crack smoking fools who go the other way; I got my spare TCI unit for less than $10 and a brand new speedo for $20. Oh, and a brand new NOS flasher cancelling relay for $9. I'm still giggling about that one.

Yehh, for 800 you can buy 2 parts bikes. Thats better than the 650 Maxim a guy has down the street for 2800. He has come down to 1800, still to high.

Since we're on the eBay rant, what about sellers who charge umpity ump more $ for shipping than the item costs? When the cost to ship something to my address is around $40, and when I check how much it would cost me to ship the same item, the same method, back to the seller's address, and see that the cost is under $18, you gotta ask yourself, WTF? Many sellers are trying to increase their profit margin this way. I now try to negociate a reduction, or I don't bid.

Padding the shipping cost is a way for them to get a higher price for the item without paying seller fees on it. You have to take the shipping cost into consideration of your "max bid". For the people who use eBay as a way to make a living, they have to consider the time they spend packing, shipping, placing their ads, etc., as well as the cost of product.

I agree, but doubling the cost seems a little excessive...I ship lots of stuff and only charge the actual shipping plus $2 for materials. If they are using shipping for eBay fee reduction, then shouldn't they reduce the price on items?? I don't see a decrease in those prices, which would totally validate your point. You do make an interesting observation that I hadn't thought of.

It would seem that the price paid is established by the buyer, right?

Mind you, I am not saying I agree with what I observe and understand, just that that is the way it is.

Bingo! The post about the seller making a profit and being paid a fair price for their packing work is also very true.

I'm not a veteran eBay buyer by any means but I'm learning and I've already been had. I have nobody to blame but myself but I "won" a part described as "as is" that was junk and should have been tossed in the recycling bin. "As is" in eBayese seems to mean "junk that would cost more to ship, rebuild and use than buying a new part."

I have no idea how eBay really works but I wonder if some folks don't offer rubbish and have a pal bid the junk up. If someone did that, are there any provisions built into the system that would detect it? Just wonderin'...

I truly believe that "caveat emptor" applies in spades when we can't really see the item we're bidding on.

Shill-bidding is not allowed on eBay and when found out, the seller and friends who artificially increased the bidding are supposed to be banned. I don't think they can catch all of them but people are usually pretty decent about their selling...at least what I've seen so far. I don't have a problem with fair shipping but like in my example above (which was actual), it didn't make any sense to me except that it was greed. Many others have actually modified their shipping charges when I've asked about reductions etc. I still have faith in most people. Yeah, sometimes the stuff you find/buy on eBay is trash, but that's business on the internet I guess.

"Shill bidding," thank you for the explanation, John. I'm a pollyanna so I agree that most people are probably pretty decent and just trying to make a fair buck.

Then again, the temptation for some dirtbag to knowingly unload junk seems to be a part of the system and I've just got to get more cautious. Never said I was the sharpest tool in the shed. :D

That is where feedback ratings come into play. If you get bit by a piece of junk like that, contact the seller to resolve. Failing that, leave very bad feedback, such as "seller sells obviously non-functioning parts" and let it go at that. Their reputation gets them bids. Bad feedback makes people more leery about buying from them and lowers the prices they will get.

you can report them for excessive S&H in this case it is a clear violation of policy. If you scroll down he offers to me $32 for one mail option and the $78 for the other but lists the higher rate. Ebay policy is to list the lower and offer the higher service if you want it.

This exact example is in their FAQ about S&H

Ahh, but there at the bottom he also says:

"there is a packaging and handling fee of $5.00 for proper materials to keep your item safe. This fee is in addition to shipping costs which are the responsibility of the buyer and will be calculated already on your invoice."

Caveat emptor, right? I do believe that this is a clear cut violation of Ebay policy.

Anybody want a really nice 400 Maxim rear wheel for FREE? Plus only $49 shipping, of course.

Seriously if anyone wants the wheel I think it's like $14 or so to ship...
