Replacing Ignitor With One From a Different Model XJ?

Hi, I've been having intermittent electrical problems for a while now. I've been out of a job over winter, and am not getting much in the way of hours in at work at the moment, so I've not been able to afford everything on the bike that needs doing.

I have almost gotten to the bottom of the problem. One of my coils isn't working, and it's the new one, the resistance test shows that the coil itself is fine. I've narrowed it down to the TCI unit, as all of the wires seem to be fine.

My question is will a different ignitor with the same external dimensions and layout, from another XJ model, work properly?

The particular one I have my eye on is this. Was also looking at this. I'm just a bit worried that choosing the wrong one would possibly make the bike run incorrectly, as there seems to be slight differences between timing on the 550, 650 and 750, and also between UK and US models (mine is a US model).

My inclination is to pay a little more to go for the 750 one. What do you guys think?

 

Buy the correct one for your bike!!!!!

 

The part number on the one on my bike at the moment is a TID14-06. Will a TID14-05, taken from the same model, work do you think, or is it too much of a risk?

 

Almost all of them will "work", meaning they will plug in and allow the engine to run. But they can have vastly different advance curves, and that can lead to either poorer, better, or dangerous (pre-ignition) changes in the engine performance.........

 

Thanks for your help, chacal. I thought I might have to buy one from the States which could have ended up costing a fair bit, but I spied an exact match in my country today on eBay, and managed to get about 40% off his asking price. Result!

 

Pernig, if you have any electronics knowledge at all, I would suggest fixing your unit. You can (and I'm taking a stab at it here) replace the switching transistor and the finial output transistors. If one side is firing, I'm betting that this is your problem.
