My fuel petcock leaks like a sieve. Should I change the gaskets in it or just look for a new one?

You can rebuild it or get a new one. What bike is it on?

    It's on an 83 XJ 750 K. 100,000 kilometers (about 60,000 miles) and counting.

Oh my goodness. Thats a lot of miles. Try a rebuild kit. Either entire rebuild or just a diaphram rebuild. Diaphram rebuilds stop leaks, the actual Petcock rebuilds are more extensive with a lot of the small parts for your petcock. Probably a better value for the petcock rebuild on a bike with such high miles. PM Chacal. I just ordered a diaphram repair from him

Haven't rebuilt one, but I understand you need to make sure that the spring is not compressed, so you may need to stretch it out just a bit.

Talk to Chacal about a rebuild kit or what you might need. Describe the situation to him and he'll set you right with good prices and excellent follow up service. He's on this forum. Just search his name, and you'll find him and his long list of parts etc.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting what seems to be a vacuum issue?
Fuel supply is fine on "prime" runs very well until the petcock is switched to "on".
I have disassembled the petcock and all components check out (to my limited experience).
When I suck/blow into the vacuum input on the petcock the diaphram seems to react appropriately.
I get vacuum from the hose connected to the carb boot.
Have tried running with the gas cap open to eliminate clogged vent issues.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

With petcock in the on position suck on the vacume line that attaches to number three carb.
If fuel doesn't flow out, it is not working properly.
I would look for a hole in the diaphram.
