Hey guys - I'm going to go ahead an apologize if I ask/say something stupid - completely new to bikes! Just bought an '81 XJ650 Midnight, and I'm wanting to replace the bars (they're bent anyway) with maybe something lower. That said, I'm pretty comfortable with the stock ones that are on there, and don't think I really want to be laying on the tank when I ride.

What are some of my (more common I guess) options, and I'd love pics and feedback as to how it will affect my ride - and maybe what problems I might run into with the cabling (I'd rather not replace the cables at this point just yet)

    Thanks for any info.

    Nice HDR photo my friend...

From my limited knowledge, if you were to go to straighter drag bars, you probably might hit the tank before doing a full turn. People tend to go with risers in that case. I personally like that arrangement and think that risers+drag bars look fairly decent. Depends on your preference though...

btw... did u use 1 raw, 3 or 5 to make that photo? software used? Just curious :)

Doesn't look like an HDR to me. Looks more of a slightly desaturated and sepia toned image with a lot of sharpening (possibly a high-pass overlay layer).. Could be wrong though :p

Nicely done though.. suits the subject.

I'm no help on the bars however.

Friend did it for me, using Adobe Light Room I think. Mild HDR, raw. -1, 0 and +1

As for bars, I'm seeing european, daytona, superbike, and drag bars as the most common replacements... any suggestions there?

Super Bike bars on mine. I like them a lot. They give me a lot more control. I'm still trying to figure out a solution for the mirrors.

That picture looks like it would be a good calendar picture next year.

I am just about to pick up an 82 xj650, I hate the original bars, I ride a 2006 yz250 dirtbike and I am wondering if I can get Renthal bars on my xj. It will lay me down a lot but I think it would look good.

The BEST EVER set of mirrors I have ever used on any vehicle was a set of Napoleon Bar End mirrors. I would have them on my Maxim byt there is too much turn in at the hand portion of the stock bars to use them.

I had them on a Virago 750. They were solid as Sears, no vibration stayed where you put 'em and you could see clear back to the state line with them because of there position outboard of the handlebars.

They can be had for about 30.00 + change and worth every penny.
