I have a quart of Amsoil synthetic Gear Lube SAE 80W-90 and am wondering if this would be good for the rear wheel gear oil in my 82 xj650?

Don't see why not as long as it covers the GL specifications given by Yamaha. It's the right weight.

I recently had a tough time finding oil for my differential. Couldn't find plain old 80 weight anywhere. I used the 80W90 but made sure the GL number was listed on the back and also made sure the label mentioned "hypoid".

    Hope this helps,

The specs for this Amsoil list API GL-5 and MT-1, and I know the old Yamaha manual calls for GL-4, and I've read that some GL-5 rated oil can be hard on "yellow" metal (brass, bronze). I just don't want to do something I will regret, though I have generally been happy with Amsoil when I use it.
