Carb question

Is there supposed to be a tiny hole drilled in each tube that goes down to the starter jet? Theres one on every tube near the main carb body and it only goes through one side of the tube.

 

Do you have a pic of what you are describing?

 

I'll go take one right now. I have been having a tough time getting the bike to start cold. Seems to me this hole would be above the fuel level and let air leak in instead of pulling fuel up the tube.

If are talking about the small dimple that is toward the right under where the bowl gasket sits, no.

I have seen more detailed ones that get down to the level of air and air/fuel mixture, but I think this one will be enough to help.

 

Its the black dot (really a hole) on the brass tube sticking up(carbs are upside down in pic) in the pic next to the rack that holds the carbs together. Every brass tube has a hole in it, in a different position like a previous owner drilled them for some reason, but it looks like the hole will be above the fuel level when its all put together.

 

Jim , that hole is a factory bleed hole. Leave it alone (don't enlarge it). Your problem is in the well that that brass tube goes into., Pick up your carb spray and shove the red spray tube into the little hole in the bottom of the float bowl. Give it a squirt with the bowl facing away from you the carb cleaner should spray out of that well about 10 feet. If that works ok then you need to run a thin wire up into the carb to see if ther is any junk between the brass tube and the plunger that lifts up when you move the choke lever. Take the plungers out and spray carb cleaner through there after you run the wire up there. It could have alot of dryed gas in there.

 

The brass tube seems like a dead end. I have a guitar string that fits loosly in that tube but stops when it gets to the base of the carb body. Does it have to make a turn or reduce to the size of the starter jet? A wire should be able to go up the brass tube and come out there the choke actuators are? Would it be easier to run the wire from the top down? I have everything off the carbs execept the throttleshafts, butterfly, etc.
