    I wonder if there is anyway to condense my threads into one. I have a lot of different threads going about the things I am doing to my bike. Anyways, today was an AWESOME day.

    I know this might just look like an engine sitting there, but for the past few weeks this baby has been in pieces and I am STOKED to have it all back together with no pieces left over.

    I also did this:

    New front and rear tires, rebuilt and painted front brake caliper, and fresh fork oil.

    Friday a buddy of mine is going to come over and help me put the engine back in the frame... :)

    It's slowly coming together.

    hi, jonmarcos, just post your next as a reply to 'progress'
    shrink your photos to max 500 x 500.
    lay the motor on it's right side, on some carpet & with your friend's help, lower the frame over the motor, much easier.
    don't forget to remove the oil filter housing & get the air box in first (unless you're fitting pods) & make sure the rear brake spindle is in the frame & the right way up. Wiz.

    Sounds like very wise advice from a man who has been there! How many times do you think those 10 ton chunks of steel and aluminum haves been horsed into place the hard way when this marvelously easier method has been available?!

    One to file away for later use for sure.

    lookin great man. Im in the middle of doin a little work myself, im tryin to do my first chop. I would love to see a few of your other threads if you could leave the link in a reply.

    By the way Wiz is right the drop the bike over the engine method saved me a lot of cussing!!!

    Actually when I went to put my engine back in the frame, we tried this method.... it ended up being easier, for us at least, to just manhandle it into the frame. Just my 2 cents though.

    HOLY CRAP WIZARD!!! im not surprised i didnt think of this, because i mainly deal with single cylinder quads......but my brother and i were totally unprepared for the extraction of my 750 engine. THIS IS FREEKING GENIUS!!!

    give that guy a beer! make it 2!

    Wizard, you sir, are a Real Man of Genius. Except I didn't wait for my buddy tomorrow. I figured I could lift the bike by myself so I went out to the garage and tried. Threw some carpet down for padding, laid the engine on it's side, rolled the frame back and laid it over the engine, pulled them both upright together, wrestled the front mounts into place, then I saw this

    Since I couldn't figure out a way to get that on I laid the bike back down and undid everything I did, then put that rubber thing on, then repeated the process to stand the bike back up.

    Almost back together again :).

    Maybe I am missing something, but how do I get the clutch lever back on the handlebars with the grips already on?

    you won't forget it next time.
    if the grip isn't stuck you should be able to get it off, I have worked a kabab skewer down around it to loosen the sucker.

    Wizard: I hammered a coat hanger flat and slipped that down, then pounded on the end with a rubber mallet, it came off.

    I tried making a custom wiring harness for this bike but I don't know anything about wiring and ended up butchering the harness beyond recognition. Saturday night I ordered a new harness for it, I'll have to wait until later to do any custom wiring. I also ordered a new rear fender since I bent mine badly when I was transporting the bike home. Here is how she sits now, just waiting for the harness:

    Do I foresee a trip to Omaha for a cruise soon? I'm only 50 miles away!! It'll be great to see another XJ on the road again. I saw a 550 Maxim here in Lincoln the other day. Too bad I was too busy to stop and talk to the dude. Maybe next time.

    Jon, do you still have the stock handlebars? I may want to look at them for my 550.

    dpawl: Thank you, and I bought the harness used off of ebay for about 50 dollars with shipping.

    Alkasmeltzer: I will definitely be up for a ride when the time comes, but I am trying not to get ahead of myself...I haven't even tried to start her yet...
    edit: I still have the stock bars but I am not sure I want to get rid of them yet, I'll wait and see how I like the riding position with the clubmans first.

    SHE RUNS!! I got everything wired up, buttoned up, and filled up, then fired her up. It took a few seconds of cranking and she smoked like a bastard once she got going but that all cleared up eventually. Just a couple of questions. My neutral light stays on permanently, whether I am in gear or not, and my taillight doesn't work. Also, I removed the turn signals since they are all busted, but I seem to have alot of extra wire leads that don't plug into anything behind the headlight bucket. I can get pictures if that'll help.
