I'm looking at a 84 Voyager. It's in pretty good shape, about 20,000 miles and good maintanence records.
Does any one have any experience with this machine?
I'd like to know if there are any issues what I should look out for.

Let's clarify first. The "Voyager" is made by Kawasaki. Yamaha makes the Venture. 1200 Voyager is a good bike while the 1300 6 cylinder they also made has its share of problems. The 84 Venture has a starter clutch problem and a 2nd gear problem. Most eventually lose 2nd gear. In 86 they fixed the 2nd gear problem and upped the engine to 1300cc while also fitting a larger travel trunk and saddle bags. The starter clutch was fixed sometime later but I can't remember which year. Also the starter clutch is easier to fix than on an XJ. It doesn't require removing the engine and splitting the cases.

You are right sir. Its a Venture. Is this the same motor that was put in the Virago? the owner says the starter was just rebuilt. I'll check it out see how it is. Looks to be in pretty good shape.
    Thanks BlueMax

It is not the same motor put in the Virago. The Viragos are big V-twins where this is a V4. An 84 will be 1200cc. Other than a bump to 1300cc in 1986 it's the same power plant still being put into Ventures today. Drive train parts are very available.

There are 2 common defects with Ventures:

1 - failed solder joints on the electronics (not a big deal)
2 - weak 2nd gear on units built prior to mid-1985 (requires splitting the case)

The starter clutches do go bad as BlueMaxim pointed out, but I think this more of a normal wear and tear item than a defect. As BlueMaxim pointed out, it's pretty simple to get to on a Venture.

The fuse box and stator plug are virtually identical to those on an XJ. If they haven't already failed they will the day after you own it.

The engine is shared with the V-Max, but with different cams, ignition timing, exhaust, and probably jetting. And 145 HP was a pre-production rumor, the reality was more like 125 HP.
