i found a bike that i was told ran im pretty familiar with the xj maxims (on my 3rd one) and was told it was a maxim but i looked at it and it is a 3 cylindar with disc brakes on front and back. Was told it was a 750 but it looks alot bigger than the 750 on the maxims. Can anyone help me figure out what it is. The tag is dirty on the neck but i saw it was an 1980 so im thinking it is an early xj that i havent seen yet or maybe an xs 750. I checked for a tag on the juggs telling the cc's and couldnt see one to figure out size. Ill try and stop back by and get some pics later but untill then any help would be nice.

It's an XS850 triple betcha anything. The reason it looks so big (and the 750 version was just as huge) is it's a SOHC motor with rocker arms.

Nice bike, not quick but solid as the rock of Gibraltar and damn near as heavy. Makes a nice tourer.

3 Cyl would either be an XS 750 or XS 850

There are a couple of dedicated triple sites out there...

. . . and it has dual overhead cams.
Check for compression first, check to verify spark, write the $350 check !!

You are correct sir! I always thought it was a 3-cyl "cousin" to the SR/XT/TT singles and the 400/650 twins, but not only does it have DOHC it has shim-over-bucket adjusters too. The camchain runs up the left side, not in the center like the XJ, big honkin' thing.

I agree that if it's in good shape and reasonably complete (make sure the exhaust system isn't rusted out on the bottom) has compression and spark it's definitely worth $350.

i got to look it over better today and it is a 1980 xs 850 everything is there except the side covers. All the chrome is perfect (no pits) just dirty Im gonna have to start selling off all my xj parts so i can come up with the money.
