Get yourself a cable luber and flush the cable out with carb cleaner or brake cleaner. Then spray with cable lube.
Be careful not to get any of the above on your tank or other painted parts.

I just bought a cable luber that works well. Not perfect but well. It was a package deal , lubber with a can of lube. Brand name Cable Life. There are others but a good cable lube in a spray can is usually best.

What sort of XJ people are you???

    Cable lubers???????

Come on, everybody knows these new fandangled devices are only for these new fandangled plastic motor sickles!!!!!

Any good XJ owner knows ya don't use these gadgets on a quality classic! They reject modernism and break down if you show them the disrespect of modern gadget inflictions!

What's wrong with the good old fashioned technique of sticking a funnel over the cable and taping them together?. Don't ya have a rafter to hang it from while the lube slowly permeates down the cable while you sleep?

My god, Next you'll be telling me you put poofy soft grips on the bars and chemicals in the tank!!!! Next you'll tell me your thinking about replacing that antique fuse box with a blade box!!! 8O Christ, Blades are hondas. The ultimate insult.

What sort of bikers are ya. Men or ..............

    p****'s.

Not an ounce of bias there eh Goon? I'm going to field the question with a measured response. Some of us (speaking for myself here) have a desire to accomplish the tasks at hand with great rapidity and dispatch, ergo we choose the latest and greatest toy to give us more time to RIDE (wink wink). Besides, in the 18 years I've had my XJ, I've never once had any issues with using the cable luber, just remember not to lubricate the line with anything (unless your really itching to, in which case use graphite). Felines? I think not. Enlightened is closer to the mark. You can use the time tested and true methods if you like, but I'll save them for the day that I don't have anything (and I mean anything at all) better to do. Another point to ponder. If we loved the old ways so much, why didn't we stick with the old bikes that had only a rear or no brakes at all? Progress can be a very good thing, in this case, it was a real "lifesaver". Besides, I haven't any rafters exposed in my garage, I'm afraid the "exposed, minimalist" look went out with the architecture of the 70's. Not that it bothered me, I'd rather have the unfinished garage in order to finish it off the way I like it, 14 gauge supply line and a 100 Amp breaker box!

    Whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Bugger, forgot to set the drag on that fishing reel.

Ya took the bait Robert.

To be fair, my piss-take is more related to my laziness and frugality.

I am one of the old school who will spend two hours in the shed making a gadget to do a job than spend half an hour and half a paycheck going to buy the gadget.

Plus you guys seem to have more gadgets that are easier to procure than us down under. :(

No exposed rafters???? Man you are unlucky. couple of board accross them and that is a great place for storage with easy access.

Guess I took it along with the sinker! I (unfortunately) bought into a condominium complex and the whole bloody thing has only 2 electrical outlets! Top it off, the Home Owners Association says I can't work on my vehicles in my garage. Twits. I do have a 10 foot ceiling, could make overhead storage. Might try that soon, need the space. Sorry about the lack of goodies down under, I understand that it has been hard to find even the simplest of toys down there. Some gadgets are just worth the price though. Cable luber is up there on the list. Sounds like an opportunity to open up an import business Goon, interested in a foreign dealership???

You can't work on your own vehicle, in your own garage? If that's the case, I'd tell them to shove it! Seriously, is that even legal? It's not like it's out in your front yard(unless I missed something here).

Just a thought, but in my experience sticky/slow throttles are usually the carbs and not the cables.

Also, seriously, your homeowners association needs to get told. What's the world coming to when a guy can't wrench on things in his garage?

I lubed my throttle cable and it made a HUGE difference... made it much much easier to throttle modulate... meaning corners were a lot smoother.

It's an easy job if you have a cable luber... and a worth while investment. Any bike shop should have an appropriate cable lube.

I think I posted a howto not that that long ago... maybe May?

Uh, oh! I have been dissed by an Aussie? Is he looking for a barney? (and I don't mean "thedude's" avatar!) Or is he really just scared of new things. And I thought Aussie's knew how to update their maintenance skills. Is the land "down under" really the land back yonder? Or is the calling of us p****'s really a psychological projection meant to relieve himself of the macho facade he has emulated to cover up his intense desire to go "back yonder" with a dude? One has to ponder! LOL. return volley, fair play! :)

Now correct me if I'm wrong BlueMaxim, but are you making some reference to me being an extra in that American box office hit Brokeback Mountain????

Back Yonder????? I would have to translate that to aussie lingo of the Outback and a dude is a Mate. Now I know this does nothing to to reinstate the Macho Facade, but then I'm not the one with the can of "lube" in the shed.

(Reference to the can of lube specifically to keep us "on topic")

Auditions are being held at studio B on the Paramount lot for the Brokeback Mountain sequel "Brokeback Outback". Hollywood insiders report that an unknown Australian native is on the A list for the leading role having edge out most seasoned American actors including pop star Lance Bass.
