electrical problem

    hi all im new here but have a q for ya all..i have a 1982 yamaha 750 maxim...heres my prob.the bike will run fine once started but it will cut out.ill loose all power no lights, gauges,nothing..it will stays like this for a long time.and then suddenlyit all lights up again....when i say awhile i mean like days and weeks at a time...ive changed the battery and checked the grounds and i srtill get the same thing.any ieas would be wonderfll ....

    Welcome. Some shots in the dark...

    When running, did you check the voltage at the battery? If so, what was it?

    Have you checked the starter brush length? If they are too short, the starter will draw too much current.

    When you lost everything, did you check the voltage of the battery? If so, what was it?

    May not be any of these things, but it is a place to start. I am sure others will weigh in as well. Electrical problems can be a real bear to run down, so you will need to be very methodical. Do you have the service manual? If not, you probably want to grab one of those because the troubleshooting flowcharts can be a big help. Also, grab the XJCD.

    Just thought of something else. Check the wiring harness for your regulator and everything in that area. It's not uncommon for them to melt and short.

    if you still have the glass fuses ditch them & fit a new box with blades, bet that is your prob.
