TWF. It's good to see you are wearing the proper clothes for doing wheelies on your Virago! If you went down it would be ridiculous to scratch your helmet, or hole the elbows or knees of riding clothes! What you are reading here is self righteous envy! Never quite got the hang of uni-cycling 500 lbs of fire breathing iron.

    Thanks for the pics!

While I'm sure my Seca could pull the wheel,
dropin' the clutch on a 27 year old ride doesn't sound like a good idea.
Now when I had the V65 that was a different story.

TwoWheelFiend, what if this happened with no gear on?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEjfUjd9 ... re=related

    WHERE YOUR GEAR!

Call me a p**** but I'm too worried about dropping my bikes to practice wheelies. Plus with only 100hp and 250kg you would have to try to wheelie, and that = bang, scrape, broken bike.

Although i do love it when she shakes her head for a bit on the first to second change :)

Ive been riding motorcycles since i was 4 years old...... ive dont thousands of wheelies. If i were doing a wheelie on a GSXR1000, i for sure would have all my gear on. But a 20 year old underpowered heavy jap bike. im not too worried about it, seeing how hard it was to get the wheel up even that high.

So the Gixxer isn't a jap bike?

I guess the road rash, bruises and broken bones you'll get from wrecking a 20 year old, underpowered, heavy jap bike feel great, compared to those you get on a GSXR1000.

can i get a rider on your insurance policy?

no offence dude but why dont you mind your own buisness? I know my abilities on a motorcycle and the risk i take when i dont have full racing suit on, kevlar gloves, uber riding boots and a full face helmet. its a risk i take and my own resposability. ive never wrecked a bike, never crashed doing a wheelie. So chill out there safety steve.

i flipped my husqvarna without a helmet, day i got it, i wore my helmet to the farm, let my uncle ride it around, then i wanted to ride around a little bit cuz it was hard to start, so i hopped on, i knew i didnt have a helmet, so i just putzed around, then i forgot i didnt have a helmet, became evel kenieval, and flipped the bike... i landed on my leg and shoulder, i couldnt breath, so i dont think my head slapped up agaist the pavement.
too afraid ill blow the shocks on my maxim, though i do gun it in first to see if i can ge tthe wheel off at all.

hammer head and two wheel, you two present a question similar to what came first, chicken or the egg.

but let me put down my opinion. the maxim is heavy and under powered..ish, is he's putzin in his back yard go ahead, he probably cant get that bike to stand straight up, now if he's going down the road i hope he has a helmet on, but he's not going to get serious road rash from a 5mph wheelie.
gixxers need helmets no matter what, if they can pull wheelies going down the highway, they are under weight over powered death traps, im too afraid ill get comfortable with that power if i ride my unlces so i never ask, then ill be eval keneal on my maxim, and wreck that... i forgot what dirtbikes dont have wheelie bars like quads...
so safety steeve, back off, its his life, and evel keneval, wear a helmet and dont harm anyone else while you risk your own life, sound fair?

None taken. So can i get that rider?

1000s of wheelies and never ONCE stepped off. Riiiiiigggghhtt.

    :)

There's a whole bunch of professional stunt riders that are going to want to talk to and learn from you about your incredible ability to have been stunting since you were 4 and NEVER taken a spill.

I know i could learn a ton from you...

Have you sold your movie rights yet?

No offence [sic]. I'm just funnin' witcha.

    Two wheel,
I really am just funin' with you. If you knew me you'd know i've done some real idiot stuff in my life and am the LAST guy to be a safety Nazi.
Speed is a drug and i'm addicted. When you're north of 150mph, having the latest gear and helmet on isn't gonna save you when Bambi jumps onto the road in front of you.
I've never wrecked a street bike, unless you count the time i dumped one riding in the snow.
Dirt bikes are a different story. I had a sticker on my the tank of my IT465 [anybody remember those beasts?] that said "Member: Over the Bars Club". LOL.
I probably crashed that sucker once per time out. Stepping off from an over rotated 3rd-gear wheelie is a joyous experience, i must say. :p

So i'm not safety Steve, and actually don't have a leg to stand on, when it comes to preaching to other people about how they want to enjoy their bikes. I'm every bit as much an idiot as the next guy.

    Peace,
    Christopher.

oh ive dropped my dirtbike more times than i can count. Never dropped a street bike wheeling. I'm not a "stunter" i dont do 12 o'clocks and stoppies, I do nice 1st and 2nd gear clutchless wheelies. If i tried "stunting" id def go down. I feel totally confident in my abilities :)

I hope you didn't take offence by what i said either, and by no means was i questioning your ability at all. Us all as motorbike riders should know that most of the time it isn't us we have to worry about... its everyone else.
Hell ive been know to give the bike a quick blast down the street without a helmet also. I guess it just hind sight aye.

The way i look at it, it takes 2 sec, its safer, why not.
people die doing allot less riskier stuff.

you know what worries me more than other people, 120mph interstate runs and bad ass wheelies? Effing deer man. I have to ride on about 8 miles of back roads lined with huge fields to get home. Ill at least see 1-3 at night when riding home.

One morning, riding to work on my ZRX1100 at just north of 100mph on a 4 lane highway, i came around a slight bend and saw TWO deer in the road ahead. One full on in the slow lane and one full on in the passing lane, just stopped, broadside, staring at me.
In the split second i had to react, i had to decide to lay it down, or try and aim for the middle of them.
I chose the latter, since it gave me a chance.
It worked. I split them like a deer sandwich at probably 90 mph.

You never feel more alive than when you almost died. Every nerve ending tingles and you're HYPER alert and even euphoric. It's like a drug, the adrenaline rush you get. If you're not careful, it can become addicting.
Looking back on my youth, from the lens of my 44 years, i have no logical explanation for why i'm still alive....

One of my favourite bikes was a TT500E which I used for daily road transport, knobby tyres, loud exhaust and all (a bit younger then) ... came around a corner at about 50mph, just got upright and straight and a big german shephard came charging out from behind a car, and went straight under the front wheel. As the front wheel hit the front of the bike went straight up into the air, then the back wheel hit and the front went straight back down again. There was a big kick in my backside as the back wheel went over the dog and then the bike was back straight ahead and it was like nothing ever happened !! I still can't believe I didn't come off. Not sure how the dog was but I wasn't hanging around for an argument with its owner. By the way my sig is a true story following an incident in Mackay on the same bike !!

In my fifty years of wondering how i got out of that alive.Seeing better people go before me playing it safe .I can only put it all down to fate "when it's your time it's time" Not to say go head and temp fate. But live it to it's fullest on one wheel or two

    Amen to that, Brother!

But you know what's worse than effing deer? EFFING COWS!! Especially a whole herd that some dumb-a$$ farmer let wander out of his field and onto the interstate! Oh yeah... And it seems that most often the dumb-a$$ farmer lives just past a slight rise in the road so you can't see the cows til it's just about almost nearly too late.

But that's probably mostly a Vermont thing.

    Now, back to wheelies.

I've lifted the front wheel on my X a few times, mostly just a few inches under really hard acceleration but I've done a few nice lofty ones. My most memorable wheelie was on a friend's V-Max though. I guess I underestimated its power vs the weight and length and I was taken a little by surprise when it went almost vertical. At least it felt that way...

No kd5uzz, it didn't work but it brought a wry smile from the magistrate !! With unlimited legal funds I could have gotten off it but they saw the loophole and decided to change the charge to dangerous driving, for which I was found guilty, had my license suspended for three months and find a few hundred bucks. But it was a cool wheelie, third gear as I recall ... easy to do on a TT but no good for the valves and rockers.

TWO TYPES OF RIDERS THOSE WHO HAVE WRECKED AND THOSE WHO WILL IF YOU RIDE LONG ENOUGH IT WILL HAPPEN,BUT YOUR RIGHT ITS ON YOU IF YOU DON'T WEAR THE RIGHT GEAR,AND IMO GET A DIRT BIKE IF YOU WANNA DO WHEELIES STREET BIKES ARE NOT MADE FOR THAT CRAP AND IT PUTS OTHERS IN DANGER

I just stood mine straight up today w/o trying, well,I was KINDA trying.
I wanted to practice my launch technique,in case I get her to the strip this year.Found a backroad w/no traffic or homes around.First couple launches the wheel came up a few inches, but the bike was perfectly under control, nice and straight

Next few tries it was fishtailing all over the road, couldn't even get my feet back on the pegs.It was flinging me around like a rag doll, felt like I was about to be ejected right off the side of the bike.Front wheel stayed planted on the ground thru all that

Well,I guess after all that spinning, the back tire was heated up and ready to bite, cause then I tried one while rolling.Didn't check the speedo, but I'd say I was going about 10-15 mph, revved her up a little, popped the clutch, and straight up in the air she went 8O

Since the most air I got till then was maybe 4 or 5 inches,I wasn't expecting that at all.Plus, after 30 years of riding, and occasionally attempting wheelies, this was the very first time I got more than a few inches of air on a street bike

Scared the living crap outta me.Convinced that I was about to be crushed under 1/4 ton of hot steel,I panicked and closed the throttle instantly, slamming the front end down.
Don't see any sign of damage.I figured at least the fork seals'd be blown out,but no signs of leakage

I thought for sure it was gonna go all the way over on top of me.
I think if it weren't for the high stepped seat,I woulda fallen off the back, lol.
What a rush!Even tho I thought I was gonna be squashed like a bug,I was giggling like a schoolgirl all the way home, and then some

I dunno if I should start a new thread for this, but i think it'd be interesting to hear comments on how to launch a bike w/o having it flip over on ya,besides installing a wheelie bar,lol

Oh,almost forgot, totally smashed my "boy bits" too 8O

Don't mess with him guys. He's got "uber boots" and he probably knows how to use them.

Reasonably and prudently is the most sure way there is to keep from getting injured. Even then it is sometimes not enough.

Persons with an IQ over 80 would agree that you stand a greater chance of getting injured when both wheels aren't on the ground. The severity of any injuries incurred increases without the gear.

My hope is that people who ride without ATGATT have good insurance so that they don't become sponges off the rest of us. Think long term disability!

It's pretty interesting sitting back and listening to the different views on riding styles, levels of risk taking we are all willing to take, and the various levels of invulnerability we each feel we have.
With my job I get to see the result of it. I work for ICBC in Vancouver. More specifically, Driver Licensing.
Apart from seeing the vehicle damage of "unexpected" crashes (have never had anyone say they expected it to go wrong), it's the impact that few seconds has on the life of the rider and there families (your families) that is the most painful to see. The number of people that attend my office annually after having to go through rehab just to be able to drive at all, is a wake up call.
We had one young woman who was in to re-qualify for her driver license after 10 years. Yes you heard right. It took her 10 years of re-hab to get to the point of being able drive again. She was a passenger, her boyfriend was killed. By the way, she is now 34 years old!
So yeah, we all like to feel the rush, isn't that why we ride in the first place? Just remember that something as small as a rock in the road, a crack in the pavement, or a small furry critter (I love small furry critters :) ) can bring a few seconds of fun crashing down and turn it into a life of pain.
So if you are going to do it, ATGATT. Be safe, we don't want to hear about any riders going down.
    Just my thoughts..

    Gotcha,thanks for the explanation
I wear all the gear,ALMOST all the time
When it's REALLY hot, like 90's,I have a hard time breathing with a full face helmet and leather jacket
I bought an open face helmet and goggles for these occasions, but sometimes I can't take wearing them in extreme heat either
When I do go helmetless/leatherless now and then,I'm thinking every second in the back of my mind that this is the day I'm gonna crash, when I'm unprotected
Kinda takes a lotta the fun out of riding when you're always half planning on losing your skin

My brother recently went down (on my bike 8O )
The usual scenario, car waits all day till you're right there, and finally pulls out in front of you, then stops.Naturally, they fled the scene w/no witnesses too
My bro figured he was doing around 45 when he laid it down
Completely shredded his leather jacket, but no real injuries, just a lil road rash and limping for a while
By an amazing coincidence,I just happened to be going by on the Harley on my way to work right after he got the bike off the road, even tho it was 4 counties away from my home, and 2 from his
I saw a bike on the side of the road and stopped to see if they were broken down, thought I recognized the riders helmet, then the bike

In the crashes I've had,I was always wearing a full face helmet and leather jacket, and they always seemed to save my hide, literally
I remember my best (?) crash where I was doing 45 sliding for about half a block on my face.Even if I was wearing an open helmet.it wouldn't have done any good.I was uninjured enough to push the bike home a couple miles.Helmet just needed a new shield
My bro and I have both been riding since 1980,and we've both had several similar experiences

I always say every time you're riding, there's a decent chance you'll go down

I've been lucky enough to only crash when doing extra stupid stuff,so at least I always kinda deserved it
    Anyway,the point is,I agree w/this ATGATT thing

I thought this thread was to show some wheelies. Yeah ATATT, there's a thread for that.

    Now let's see some wheelies.
