I have a 81 seca 750 that I know I need new clutch friction plates on. I have them ordered and am waiting to get them in. As of now the gears drop in hard it seems. They kind of clunk into place. I'm wondering if my clutch is too tight or too loose right now. Any help would be great.

    Thanks!

Could be either. Is it physically difficult to shift? That would indicate too tight, and if it slips, that would indicate too loose.

It is a little difficult to shift, however when test riding if I put it in first it will idle run, but after that it doesn't matter how much thottle I give it it doesn't run any faster.

does the engine rev up though? Just the bike doesnt accelerate? Because that's stereotypical really bad clutch slip =)

put the bike on the center stand... pop it in gear and see if it spins the tire... be careful not to send the bike into the garage wall / door or neighbors car when doing this. .... try adding slack to the cable adjuster and the handle... make it snug but just a hair loose..... even if the clutch is toast usually it will spin the tire on the centerstand.

Engine revs like normal, just no "go". I agree on the clutch slip. Will the new plates take care of this, or is it something that needs adjustment?

this is supposing that the rear brake is in good order and not preventing the tire from turning:

souds like you need a clutch kit... disks, plates, spings etc... if your able to shift all the gears and you can hear it slip - time to open it up and have a look at the clutch assembly... the disks are probubly trash get a look at the plates and springs

When you say disks I'm assuming you mean the friction disks, correct? If so, I have a new set of them on the way, the plates are good (not warped and look very clean) and I have a new set of springs coming as well. It's just that it's 72 and sunny in MN and I'd like to be on the road today, not in the garage. :)

Thanks a ton for the help on this. I just needed to spend some time getting it just right. It's a little rough still, but it shifts and holds well. I think the roughness will come out with the new disks and springs, hopefully

+1 on the oil ... i had a thread going about this.... my maxim diddnt like thr rotella or the castrol... and i was going to go the way of the yamalube except my local dealers wanted 5.99 a qt.... castrol and rotella caused my clutch to slip a bit and gave me some valve train noise.... when i swapped over to the valvoline 20/50 wet clutch i got some better grab out of it and better up / down shift feel and the valvetrain noise is not as present as it was, other things i notices were a small increase of power and a smoother idle, easier cold - warm ups.

this is not a sales pitch - just my findings

If you're waiting on new parts and desperate, shuffling my clutch plates solved my slipping issues with a quickness. The clutch probably won't hold up for very long, but as I said, if new ones are on the way....

Yeah, I'm using Yamalube 20/50. Got it at somewhat better price, 4.29 a quart.

Is there a certain order that the plates need to go in? All of them came in a pack and all looked to be the same. Help!
