Clutch slippage ? again!

Ok, i did search and read all i could. My main ? is this. Is there suppose to be some slack in the lever or not? I have read both tight and then others say slightly loose. My bike will slip in all gears when hammering it down at like 4grand. It grabs for a second and then slips and RPM's go nuts. I have to back off and ramp up slower. Pain in the butt when trying to pass. Did not have this issue last year. But i messed with it this spring before i had a manual and read Rick's guide. I was trying to make it easier to get into neutral. Please HELP!

 

I would say you might be in need of a new clutch if its slipping that badly. Have you changed oil recently? Maybe the clutch just doesn't like your new oil?

Personally, I run about 1mm of 'play' in my clutch lever. Just enough that my fidgeting as i prepare to shift doesn't actually disengage the clutch at all.

 

Oil has been changed last 2 times with Rotella 15w40. Should not be the oil. Last night i tried this. Let me know if this is too tight? I pulled on the cluch lever while cruising 60 and only pulled about 1/4 inch tops and it released the clutch. I have to let out the clutch 3/4 of the way just for it to engage when starting out.

 

Have you double checked the adjustment at the crankcase shaft? I found that mine was off and it is doing much better after I redid that adjustment.

There should be around 1-2mm of play at the lever if I remember right.

 

I have not touched the adjustment at the case area. Only the lever. I will look into it today and get back with what i find. Thanks for the input Joe F.

 

you could try this, it makes clutch adjustment much less critical with the extra throw
i went through the same thing last year, still slipped like yours
tried the extra hole so i knew it wasn't adjustment and it still slipped
short answer clutch springs problem solved

 

Followed Ricks write up to the T. Problem gone! Took it out and really got on it. Not a slip to be found. Thanks Rick for the well done write up on clutch adjustment.

 

Agree Dave. I wasn't having slippage problems, but I knew the adjustment was not right. Rick's write-up was excellent!
