My 82 xj650j has some issues...that's an understatement, but I'll try to stay focused on one thing at a time.

Just bought this bike a few weeks back. I rode it home approx. 75 miles with no issues, except soft to non-existant front brake - yikes. Anywho, now it's acting strange. It will start on full choke and prime position on tap. I then switch to on or run and it runs okay but dogs or hesitates when throttle is increased. After riding a short distance (less than a mile) it wants to stall and will unless I switch the fuel tap back to prime.

I'm thinking maybe a vacuum problem? So here's my question (probably just the first of many to come I'm sure), should I be able to easily pinch the vacuum line shut with my fingers or should it resist collapse better than that? Is it possible that the po installed a non-vacuum hose where a vacuum hose should be and it's collapsing after heating up? Maybe I didn't experience this fuel supply issue on my initial ride home since it was all highway speeds on a rather cool day?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Head up to the auto parts store and get a foot of vacuum line. It's a cheap way to be certain.

If you can ride around on PRI without a problem, then spend a dollar on new hose. Get new fuel line and an in-line paper filter while your at it, before you crud up your good running carbs.

While your wrenches are out, grab a rag, pump-up and hold your front brake, and just break loose the banjo fitting to bleed some air( up near your reservour). Pump up and repeat. Protect your tank paint !!

And welcome to the site !!

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to get some new line asap. I forgot to mention that I was able to clear up the brake issue and I'm waiting for the bike shop to get the correct pads in since they initially ordered the wrong ones - yipee. Once I get them, everything will be ok as far as stopping is concerned.

I'll let you know if the new vac line fixes the problem. There's already an in-line filter installed but i'll update the fuel line as well......it could be regular rubber hose for all I know. Better safe than sorry.

    Thanks again.
