    I just changed the oil in my 1982 yamaha XJ650 maxim. I used a wix filter(24934) and I was wondering if it takes a little while for the O-ring on the cover to seat. It's leaking a little around the whole cover. Any info would be appreciated thanks

    Nope - shouldn't be leaking at all. Possible you maybe got some dirt on it while installing?

    Or it got out of place and pinched somewhere and the leak is migrating around it.

    Ok Thanks, I'll take it back off and check. Is there any way it could be upside down? Theres a tab on it and I put it towards the top. It fit in between 2 fins so I left it there. Is that right? Thanks again guys for your replys.

    That's funny. I noticed a small drip of oil hanging off of my oil filter cover this morning. What I noticed first was the smoke from the headers as the oil started burning off. Should the filter be tightened more? Was that a dumb question?

    Tab goes up between the fins as you have it. Be sure to tighten it properly and not over torque the bolt you will have a bigger mess.

    Most leaks will be the gasket...

    Man, I need to get on a date more often.

    This thread is starting to perk me up.

    NO!!! You don't want more than 11ft/lbs on that oil filter bolt!!!

    No such thing as a dumb question... (there are of course dumb answers)
    We, and by we I mean the forum collectively have either had this done to our bikes or know someone who has over torqued that bolt trying to stop a leak. For this application, tightening doesn't do any good. Buy good oil o-rings (such as those that come with the oil filter kit from FRAM) and fix the problem at the start.

    I use an air impact wrench on mine. (I don't want any oil to leak out and cause any more global warming.)

    1kg=2.2LBS
    1.5kg=a little over 3lbs

    1M=roughly 3'

    a little over 3lbs x a little over 3' = about 11ft/lbs

    and i wonder why i failed high school math... "practical math means close enough!"

    I didn't know the conversion from kg/m to ft/lb.

    I teach high school science and if I could get the kids to do the above I would be exstatic. Instead, they want to punch a bunch of number's into a calculator and get a silly answer like 10.8559536471 ft-lbs. You would have passed my math class easily! (Except the minus points for your units which are ft-lbs (multiplication) not ft/lbs (division). :)

    7.24 ft-lb (or lb-ft) = 1 Kgf-M

    Kgf is kilogram (force) the equivalent force to 1 kilogram of mass or 9.8 Newtons

    Wouldn't torquing to 1.08559536471E+01 be a better bet?

    Or, alternatively ln(exp(10.8559536471))? That would be perfect.
