I've always noticed this but it's starting to get worse and that bothers me.

My engine, especially at low rpm's, sounds like there's a tea kettle screaming inside of the cylinder head. After I get about 4,000+ it goes away, that or I can no longer hear it over my pipes, but below that there is just a high pitch screaming coming out of my engine.

I've ridden other XJ's but I've never head it as loud as my 1985 XJ700N. What could be causing this and please tell me there is a way to fix it if it is a problem?

My 85 MaxX has a similar noise. I think it is comming from the exhsust but not sure. My noist comes and goes at different rpm, I wish I could find it. Since the noist is not consistant , I don't think there is any engine issues. I'll just ride it until I can figure it out.

You guys sure it's not the tach or tach cable? Or do those have an electronic tach?

The 85' 700 has an electronic tach. Could it possibly be the speedo hub spinning up?

I was going to go out and buy a torque wrench today and make sure all my exhaust flange bolts were tightened to spec. Perhaps one is not down all the way and there is a small air leak around it.

My X does the same thing.

I have checked the exhaust, carb boots, speedo, and still not found where it is coming from.

It has done it since I bought the bike and I have not seen any bad effects from it yet.

It does change pitch with rpm. The higher the rpm the higher the pitch. If I pull the clutch in it stops immediately.

If it is the gears spinning up is this just a natural sound in the engine or is it a sign that something needs to be lubed up or replaced?

i just figured it was a whine in the exhaust, similar to an early VW beetle.

Well, the fact that it stops when you disengage the gearbox with the clutch should provide a clue.

Do our bikes have the equivelant of a throw-out bearing? Is it something with the clutch plate basket?
