I posted a while back that I picked up a 1985 XJ700 for $200. Well, I finally have the project underway, took off the carbs for a thorough rebuild and found out that one of the float pillars (the part of the carb where the float hinges on two pillars) is broken! The previous owner or someone before him fixed it by drilling two holes on either side of the crack and threading wire through the holes and tying the wire off. Very crude, to say the least. So, there is a '81 XJ650 that a dealership is parting out and I was looking to you guys to see whether or not the carbs are interchangeable. Both bikes come with the stock carbs (Hitachi), I'm almost positive they interchange but wanted to make sure before I dive into buying a new carb an hour away only to find out that it won't match up with the rest!

Have you tried comparing Yamaha part numbers?

That's not a bad fix with the wire.
You could try JB Weld and the wire to hold it while it cures.
It's been done here before, there's even pics somewhere.

They will "fit" but are slightly smaller in carb throat size and of course, completely different jetting all around (even the vaccum pistons and emulsion tubes are different). I think you might end up spending quite a bit of time trying to properly "tune" the 650 Hitachi carbs to get them to run WELL on the 700 engine.

Mrcarb - Haven't done that, though I'll call the dealer that has the parts bike today.

The Hound - Thanks for the heads up on the JB Weld, I might just end up going that route.

Chacai - Thanks for the response, that is exactly what I needed to hear.
