Hello all, another new guy here. just bought my 82 xj750r seca a few months ago, and just got it registered and got my license. love riding the bike its in pretty good shape new tires new plugs and all new fluids. just have one question for all the other seca riders. I took the bike on a 40 mile trip at mostly highway speeds ( about 60-65) and the rpms were really up there at 60 it was at about 6000 to 6500 rpms is this normal it just seemed a bit high. or maybe i'm not used to the bike. anyway any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

These bikes do rev high at high speeds. My 650 seca does about 5000 rpms at 60. I don't have experience with the 750s though.

welcome to the site! You will find all sorts of good info. I have a Maxim, so I am not sure. My Maxim is about 4000 RPM at 50.

thanks guys maybe it is just normal, i'm also looking into buying a fairing so maybe it will cut down some on air resistance and i wont have such high rpms. its just a bit annoying.

There should be no slippage between the engine output and wheel output, so I believe your rpm will be the same for a given speed with or without a fairing (fuel consumption can be different). I haven't gotten a chance to ride mine yet but from what I've read these engines aren't really enjoying themselves until the 7000-9000 range.

thanks for the link Manbot it seems as though they are meant for that kind of rpm. and your right about the 7000-9000 range i looked into that and found that the max hp is at or around 9000rpm.

I have recently rehab'd my instrument cluster and speedo cable. I've checked myself against GPS to check the accuracy. I can tell you that 7k is 85 mph. I max out my speedo at that point. Your readings are accurate I think.

High rpm's have been covered many times. It's simply the nature of these beasts. They are built for it and perform well at high RPM's.

I tell you, I have no business ever riding a modern sport bike. The highest RPM in 5th gear that I've attained is 7,200 which might be around 90 mph. After that, I start to lose my nerve. New bikes that top out at over 200 mph simply boggle my mind.

I'll agree with you there, about modern sport bikes. and yeah all the searching i've done suggests that high rpms are normal, it just feels like i need one more gear, in fact i even tried to shift up one more gear a couple of times, ha!
oh yeah and thanks Oddball and Maxims and Kendall

Done that a few times too! Not used to hearing an engine revving over 5k  But now I look at my speed and tach. If it's 2:1 (Km/h to RPM) then I know I'm in fifth already. BTW, on my 750 my tach is at 5k when I'm travelling 100 km/h (60 mph) but that's a Maxim, maybe different gear ratio...

Yep, me too. There is even a thread on here where a guy was trying to make a taller 5th gear. Everyone wanted one.

Yeah a taller 5th gear would be nice. Although i've started to get use to the higher rpm. it doesn't annoy me like it used to.

On 2 wheels... just lost my hat.
when I hit 5k in any gear, I am trying to shift to drop it down. took mine on the highway and I wasnt very comfy with the high rpm and the bike was a bit squirrely.
I am more than happy cruising around town at 45mph. It's amazing how many newer sport bikes try to race me. harley's wont try, but everyone else does.

jmelton, welcome to the site. these bikes love the hi RPM range. from what I have read hear on several other posts, these are basicly race engines made for the street. Aint it beautifull? You gotta love it.

yes i do love it. rode my bike today in fact and had two offers to buy it from me. one as i was still in my driveway lol. so i guess i'm not the only one to love it. and as far as being race engines, i think i read something somewhere that the 82 seca was the fastest 750 production bikes in 82. although i could be mistaken, iether way it is a joy to ride.
