New to the website. Didn't know there were so many XJ owners out there. This is great! I have an 82 650 Maxim that has developed a hard start when hot over the last few seasons. It is getting progressively worse. Here is what happens:

After getting up to operating temp, if I turn off the engine and let it set for more than a minute or two, I can barely get it started. It cranks over strong but no fire. It doesn't seem to make any difference if I choke or not. I have tried turning the petcock to prime, and adjusting the throttle etc. I can usually get it started after extended cranking, but something is not right. Once it cools off it will fire right up. Here is the kicker. If I coast it and pop the clutch it will start instantly every time. What's up with that? It can't be a fuel issue.

I replaced the plugs. No change. Thanks for your help!

Hello, i am new to this forum as well. I dont have a service manual to give you any specs but will put my two cents in. I may be a plug wire issue. Plug wires break down when they get hot and lose continuity. I had an issue like yours with another bike of mine-it was bad wires. You can use an ohm meter to test the coils and wires. to test the primary winding( teminal to terminal on the coil) disconnect the wiring to the coil and test from terminal to teminal with the meter on 20 ohms setting-this is where im not sure-it should read somewhere around 4- 7 ohms. at least thats spec on a madura. now for the secondary winding test. This will be where the problem is- use the ohmeter on 100k ohms and test from plug wire cap to plug wire cap. (where the plugs would go in) this reading should be around 15-25 k ohms. If its open or way high- it needs attention. I dont know if the wires are serviceable or not. anyone elso know? Just an idea for you to think about-Jake

Could it be flooding? When you get it to start does it blow black smoke for a sec. The other thing is is your charging system up tp par. Check your batttery voltage running & when cranking to see what that is. All info you can provive helps.

When was the last time you checked/adjusted the valves?

I doesn't seem to be flooding. Again, the weird thing is that when I coast and pop the clutch it starts immediatley and runs fine. It acts kind of like it does when the battery is getting low. When the battery is getting weak it acts the same way except it does it when it is cold then as well. Right now it starts great when it is cold. I really think I have an ignition problem. Maybe not getting strong enough spark when it is hot.

The wires are probably the original wires. I havn't replaced them in the 12 years I have owned it. I have not adjusted the valves either. The guys at the Yamaha shop said it doesn't need it. I have 25K on the bike.

I'm thinking it may be the coils or wires. I will try the tests that snayke62 suggested when it is hot and let you know the results.

It's possible the starter is drawing too much when hot and pulling the voltage low. I'd make sure all the connections to the starter are clean, grounds are good, clean and lube starter and make sure starter brushes are good.

I'm thinking this is my problem. I am going to check out the starter. Any idea how much current the starter is supposed to draw?
