    Hello,

I'm lookin for a set of decent mufflers for 82 Yamaha XJ 650 Maxim. One has a huge hole in it, which even if patched still does not sound good, since the previous owner decided to drill holes in the mufflers for more noise. A silly decision that I don't know how to undo.

The OEM mufflers give maxim a very nice and peaceful hum, and XJ ain't no V-twin and the sound is not pleasant.

Those are alittle hard to come by. There are guys here pulling them off and putting on aftermarket headers for the same reason you are looking for some new mufflers. You might be going to a MAC system. 4 into 1 if you can't find any stockers.

I don't want to sound stupid, but what are headers? Also, how much would a mac system be (my entire bike cost some $600)?

Headers are pipes that go from the heads all the way back to where the muffler clamps on. Its an aftermarket exhaust system. You can shop for a set up from Accessories Intl. out of Florida. You'll be looking at 300.00Plus for a new system. Keep an eye on e-bay. you might find it cheaper.

I decided to go after market, you can still get them new(I think) but they will cost dearly.
I got a set of the Dunstal reproductions and love the sound, similar to the OEM.

I have new headers. My collector box is fine. I want to get at least one muffler (left side) but preferably both. I don't want to spend more than $200. Any ideas?

I have 2 mufflers but they are not pretty. The bodies are sound but they could use a paint job or one hell of a cleaning. I took them off my bike to put on a Midnight Maxim system, I like black. They are for a Maxim 750, 1983 year. Take a look in my gallery to see them, I'll try to get you some pics if you need.

Yes go to that ebay link NOW! That is a deal you will never find again.

If you don't get those lots of people are using Harley Sportster mufflers. You can find them cheap and in good condition. I just put out a WTB add on craigslist in my area and had 4 responses in 24hrs. You can usually get a set for $30-$50.

Will those Harley Sportster mufflers just bolt on? Or is modification needed

It will fit and bolt on to the collector box just like your stock one do. You will have to fabricate a bracket to hang them from the bike. On the Seca the muffler mounts at the rear foot peg so some bracket will have to be made to bolt it there.
