oil leaking around oil filter area

    I have had my 82 xj650 for a few days and it hasnt leaked a drop of oil and last night i got home from work and noticed a small oil puddle. I got down look where it was coming from and it is coming from the oil filter area. what might i do to stop this?

    You will be pulling the oil filter housing off and inspecting the o-ring. Plan on replacing it. Also check the filter housing to see if there is any cracks or damage. If you buy the right filter kit from Fram it comes with a new o-ring.

    My xj 550 did the same thing.......took the housing off....put a new filter and O ring in for under 10.00....no more leak......nothing serious but fix ASAP!

    if i cant get a fram will i be able to purchase an o-ring seperatly when i buy the filter?

    Not sure if the auto pars store will have one. I know the yamaha dealer would but thats the last place I would buy one. Don't know what part of the counrty your from but there are a few other filters that come with the o-rins. I know Wix does not.

    I usaully get all my parts from team powersports honda/yamaha i will check with them. Why would the yamaha dealership be the last place you would buy one?

    Probably because he doesn't want to pay $4.27 (Yamaha price) for an o-ring he gets free with a Fram filter. Actually, you get BOTH o-rings, the one that goes on the bolt too, Yamaha list $2.97.

    I make that to be at least $7.24 worth of o-rings; Fram filters (with rings) usually go for less than that (unless of course you buy them from the Yamaha dealer.)
