Hey guys I'm new to the site but I been reading here alot this place is great and I learned alot. I just got my first 81 xj650 about 4 weeks ago and I been working on a couple things. My first Mod was putting harley mufflers on I finished last night and let me tell you wow I am so happy the bike it does not sound like a harley but it sounds mean I really was not going for a loud bike but wanted it to sound better. I would tell anyone who wants to do it go for it its worth it just be sure you have the right tools on hand " mig welder" I was able to grind off stock hangers and kickstand bumpers and reuse them worked great. The best part was I got the mufflers on ebay for a total of 47.00 with shipping and they were brand new.

If you get a chance, you should post some pics, or a video so we can see / hear it...

    Nice job!
It's even easier with the xj750's.
I blocked the crossover hole with a threaded steel pipe cap (for those of us who don't have welding equip), and used copper pipe as a gasket/reducer between the new harley muffler and existing pipe.
Sounds a little throatier but mainly cost a lot less than buying new aftermarket mufflers.
$30CDN for the mufflers, $1.50 for the cap ends and $5 for the steel to make some mounting straps.

You can get the Harley mufflers without the cross-over port in them (from sportsters) Just makes it easier not having to plug those ports. I have a pair on mine and they do sound "just right" to me. Not too loud at all. Just a nice deep rumble that I was looking for. Stock is too quiet and most after market systems seem to be too loud out on the road at higher rpms.
I've tried all kinds of mufflers, from the cheap shortie mufflers, Vance & Hines, Screamin' Eagles (Harley) and also dfferent baffles, but could never get them with a perfect sound (for me)
Being I have a radio on my bike, I didn't really want the pipes to be loud at highway speeds, but I did want it to sound like a bike and not a sewing machine. The stock Harley mufflers look good and sound good for alot better price than most after market mufflers if you get lucky on Ebay.

My mufflers were off of a 2005 Sportster and they have the crossover ports. It was a 30 second task to screw in the caps and they are solid as rock.

OK, some Sportsters must not have the crossover ports in them. Mine didn't.
