I have got a 1983 XJ650 Maxim and I want to change the front brakehose into stainless steel ones. Now I saw that there was a small connectionbox in the middle of the brakehose dividing it in two seperate ones. Can anyone tell me what the box is for? And if I can take it out?

Holland, like in Holland? or, Holland, like in Michigan? At any rate, welcome to the site. I assume your bike has dual front rotors and calipers. Assuming that, the piece you are describing serves to balance the hydlaulic pressure to the two calipers, giving balanced braking. Don't think you want to remove that.

I believe that junction works to provide braking power to both the left and right calipers. If you remove it, you will only have braking on one side.

Not a very safe thing to do.

Power and balance of the front dual disks. Don't remove. Don't know why you'd want to remove. Stainless lines from chacal are designed to bolt right up to it as is the line from the MC...

I only have one disc at the front so the brakehose goes in the box one way and one hose goes out the other directly to the one disc I have. I heard that it could be something activating the brakelight but I question that.

I took mine off when I turned my 81 xj650 into a bobber and replaced it with braided steel. Works absolutely perfect. I think that is just a junction to take the stock line from one side of the headlight to the other without causing a bind.

Anyway, take it off and put your hose on. It will work fine.

Cole, if you reread his post you'll see that he says "the Netherlands" which is the more accurate name for what we call "Holland", land of the windmills, dykes, and tulips.

I remember going to the miniature city they have there, among other things like the cheese markets. I can't remember the name of it. An entire small city in miniature scale, I wonder if it is still there? That was almost 40 years ago.

Ruud, if your XJ has dual rotors, that box is to split the braking for both sides. Earlier I misread and assumed it was a 750.

If you only have a single rotor and caliper, then I don't know the functional purpose.

PS. I loved visiting the Nederlands. Even more beautiful than Germany where I spent so many years.

Also Ruud, and please, no offense intended, it will help people reading the forums to know more of the subject when you post, so please try to be a little more specific than "Question" and more people will be more likely to read it. Something like "Cuestion on brake lines" ... Also, putting it in the a more accurate forum helps too. This would have been better under XJChat or XJ modifications.

The miniature city is called Madurodam ( www.madurodam.nl) and is still there. The cheesemarket can be in Alkmaar or Gouda. I will pay more attention to where I post the questions and be more specific.

Thanks for your replies and sorry for my poor English.

Ruud, I think we were at the Gouda market.

Your English is fine and far better than many natives! Looking back at my own post I see a couple of typos that I made.

My bike only has one rotor but still has the distribution/splitter box. I recently replaced my lines with braided steel (thanks Chacal!) but replaced both lines (above and below the box). I have no idea what function it serves unless it is just to offer the option of installing a second rotor at some point.

tumbleweed_biff - I also visited that miniature city when I visited Holland many years ago. Pretty amazing... I was stationed in Germany (Schwabish Hall) for two years when I was in the Army in the 1970's

I'm sure Europe has changed just a bit since I traveled around there many years ago.

Ruud, we don't close topics. Someone can come along two years later, add a note, and bring it right back to the top. They are sorted according to date of last response.
