Does anyone know if the carbs from an 80 xj650 will work on an 82 xj650? I'm thinking of getting a used set off ebay and just rebuilding them while I still ride with the old ones, then replacing the old ones when I'm done with the rebuild.

I am far from and 'expert' but you can certainly check part numbers here.
I would suspect they'll work but best to check before bidding.

I like your idea because you could clean the first set later and sell them if you wish. More riding, less downtime. :D

A few weeks ago I pulled my '82's carbs and put them on an '81. runs great, needs some work, but they are compatible. The 80 and 81 are very similar, more so than the 81 and 82 IIRC.

Non-YICS Hitachi carbs for the 650's are the same as the YICS ('82-up) Hitachi carbs for the 650 in every way except:

    * the '82-up YICS carbs are set to run leaner via the use of a bigger pilot AIR jet.

    * the '82-up YICS carbs have a much finer-threaded pilot mixture circuit regulating screw ("idle mixture screw"), so you can more easily make much finer tuning adjustments to that circuit.

Chacal is amazing, I swear he knows every detail about every screw on our bikes. Plus the only thing he doesn't sell is Muffler Bearings and Turn Signal Oil. But any crappy mechanic will sell you that stuff for at least half of the regular price.

I too am rebuilding/cleaning and tuning a separate set of carbs for my bike. I think it is a great idea to own a separate set to do this. i may pull of my original carbs, put on my new ones, tune and clean my originals and put those back on and sell the spare ones I have.
