Here's the summary version of the story:

I have a friend who has acquired a large quantity of old fairings and other parts over the years. He has asked me to help me sell some of them. Without giving it too much thought, I said I would.

It turns out a lot of the plastics are not marked as to what kind and year of bike they came from.

I have used the ID's molded into the fairings and tried to do a reverse-parts look-up at ronayers.com, etc, but have come up empty. (Close but not exactly right.)

Here's a couple of example of the codes:

    Honda R Lower, 64420-MWOB-000

(It also has what appears to be year indicator with the years 93, 93, and 94.)

    Suzuki
    94471-21E00
(also the same sort of calendar as the Honda)

If anyone can help me with how to read the codes and attach the correct years and models to these parts, it would help to put some useful parts back on the road.

These are just for fairings, but if anyone has any suggestions for instrument clusters, etc., I've got some of those, too.

    Thanks,
    Bill

The Honda part "Googles" as CBR900RR; the Suzuki part looks like it's for an RF600, whatever that is.

    Thanks!

That's pretty much what I came up with, but when I went to some of the online parts databases and looked up the part by year and model, I couldn't come up with an exact match.

Maybe I'm making this more difficult for myself than I should. Maybe on parts like fairings, close is good enough. I'm just trying to be sure.

By the way, the Suzuki is a mid '90s sport bike. The little brother to RF900 R.

    Thanks again,
    Bill

Quite often the number stamped into the part is the component number or "family" number, this is especially true if the component is part of a larger assembly that is covered by a single part number. You most likely WON'T get an exact match in that case; just close.

So, on the Suzuki for example, the 94??? is the cowling assembly (maybe) and the the 21E00 indicates the model?

I know it would be a different system for different manufacturers, but is that the gist of it?

For example, I'm pretty sure the last three zeroes on the Honda would be replaced by a paint code at some point in the manufacture process.

    Thanks

With colored parts each color will have a different part number. The same mold is used regardless of the color plastic or the paint that's put on.

Makes it really tough to do parts lookups. A fuel tank might have been used for 5 years on several different models. Every year/model the part number changes because the color is different.

    Thanks.

So far I have spent several hours online with different search engines trying to match stuff up, but like bigfitz52 said, I can only get close, not exact. I'm hoping that's good enough.

I would really like to be able to help my friend out and sell some of this stuff. I guess the burden is going to have to be on the buyer to check mounting hole. tabs and slots to make sure they match up.

By the way, if I run across any Vetters or Seca fairings, I'll post them on the for sale forum here first.
