I was looking around to buy some new turn signals to run off of an electronic flasher relay. I like a lot of the $15 LED signals on ebay but couldn't figure out what makes them different from $50 signals. Also, what size is the threaded turn signal attachment on a 1982 XJ750 Maxim? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Could be a big difference in the quality of the materials, or could just be someone is trying to make an extra $35.

I had a guy brought me low profile mirrors to put on his Katana. Paid $120 for them. They are essentially an injection molded door stop with chrome plating. Even the mirror surface is just chromed plastic.

No adjustment, not even a mounting bracket. Just supposed to remove the fairing and run a sheet metal screw into them. Did come with a drill bit though.........

The $15 versions are not DOT approved........DOT approval costs $$ and it gets you the (legal) right to put "DOT" on the lense itself.

They might be exactly the same.
One an upstart the other a Brand Name.

Packaging and Marketing ad to an accessory's cost.
A label with YAMAHA, Bar Code and Part Number stuck to a small plastic bag raises the price of some generic parts ... 60 to 80%

You usually get what you pay for, in most cases. I bought a pair of cheap ones ($15) and they are made out of plastic. I like'm and they get the job done just fine.
Some of the LED versions are not as bright as they need to be. I followed bikes with the more expensive brand and they weren't very bright (not noticable) and could be dangerous. The cheap ones I got are alot brighter (as good or better than stock) and actually work better than the expensive ones.
I want my signals to be noticed by other drivers, so I lucked out.

PainterD, your experience above is counter to the argument you pose in the first line. You bought the cheap ones and made out better...

There is a business phenomena that if you raise the price, people will automatically think its better. Works best when the price is ALOT more than similar items. (Think about purses, shoes, pants, shirts etc.) Just because it costs way more does not mean its any better...

    IMHO

Like I said, you USUALLY get what you pay for, but not always. In the case of the cheaper turn signals I installed, I like mine better than those fancy shmancy pricey ones that cost more and do not deliver in the FLASH dept. Yes, they may look better on the bike when it's parked at a rally or in front of the local hangout, but they don't seem to flash very bright, which to me is a concern for being seen by other motorists.

Re: What makes the $15 turn signals different from $50 signa

My turn signals are from a store here locally that just sells aftermarket bike parts and accessories. I think I paid $15-$17 for them. They are nice and bright too. They are made of plastic and seem to be well made.
I know they make an LED version of mine, but they are more expensive and I don't know how bright they are, so I guess I'l' stick to what works for now.
