Yes, you can. Or you can look into using the sending unit to add that functionality to your bike with an add-on gauge.

The sending unit is what tells you how much gas you have left in the tank. So if you hook up a gas gauge to it, you can now see how much gas you have instead of cruising down the highway and then having your bike stall out leaving you to suddenly figure out, in traffic, that you need to turn the reserve on, wait for the carb bowls to fill, and then start up again. Definitely not fun when you are on the freeway.

I've run out of gas on the highway a few times on my Maxim... but never the way you spoke of tumble. I can feel it in the throttle and the bike 'talks' to me, I can feel the bike losing a bit of momentum and suddenly I am turning the throttle 1/4 turn more to stay at the same speed. I just flip while still driving, and problem solved.

Suprised yours runs out on you so fast.

And yes - the 750 tanks ARE bigger.

Maybe my petcock is broke or something, but I know long before it stalls that it is starting to look for gas. I have to give it more throttle, it hesitates more, seems less powerful, etc. I have never come close to stalling do to low fuel levels. Do some of you have bikes that just stop when reaching the reserve level without any warning at all?

650 Maxim tanks are 13 litres
750 Maxim tanks are 19 litres
A very worthwhile upgrade, and one I've been dreaming of doing for years -- just can never afford the thing when one comes up for sale.

My 700 holds 2.7 gals of gas, and I dont have a gas light. Well, I did, but the PO took it out for some reason.
But no, she doesnt just "Stop" KT. It kinda jerks you around a bit as your throttle efforts feel in vain. You'll notice it, trust me. As soon as you feel that jerky throttle sensation just reach down and turn to RES.
Happened a few times to me out here in the country. Luckily on my joy rides I never go more than 4 miles from home. As soon as I hit the reserve (.5 of a tank) I know I can at least make it home. You can probably run about 10-20 miles on Res if you keep RPMS below 4.5k

i have ran out of gas twice now, both times she kept running no jerking just very sluggish, both incidents were related to a piece of tank liner that had hit and broken the sending unit solder joint..... repaired and its back to normal.

keep in mind i run about a tank or more every day that i ride..... you get used to stopping at about 85 - 90 miles to fuel up.

I must clarify - no, it didn't just suddenly quit. I just didn't realize what was happening. But it does happen fast sometimes. The first time I was on the freeway going with the flow of traffic commuting to work. I habitually drive in the left most lane as then there are only two directions I have to watch out for bonehead moves or being cut off. And I have an emergency area of the shoulder to cut into if I have to.

Anyways, the sputtering and hesitation lasted about 10 sec and I didn't know what was wrong. After a moment I realized that it was probably the biking out of gas. I was able to reach down and switch to res, but it was still dicey as when it happened, again I was pushing 75 mph with traffic riding my ass behind me. There were a couple of angry people when my bike suddenly slowed and dropped to about 45 before I could get it running again.

The other time I didn't have much of a warning at all. I turned left out of a parking lot into traffic and as I finished the turn, the bike stalled out. I only had about 3-4 sec of "warning". After switching to res, it wouldn't start right away and I had to pause for a bit to wait for the bowls to fill up before it would start.

Neither experience was fun or the safest thing in the world.

    XJ50ss:
The 750s have a light that comes on when the fuel is getting low. However, the sending unit is a variable resistance unit so you can put an analog gauge to get variable range of E to F.

And the 750 tank is bigger. That is a 5 gal tank where most stock 650s have a 3.3 gal tank. Personally I am not thrilled about a required stop every 100 mi or so to gas up. The 750 I am parting out was purchased just so I could get the tank - the guy wouldn't sell me just the tank. I actually just got the POR-15 tank sealant on it yesterday and will be putting it on my bike soon, I just need to get the outside painted as there was a lot of "damage" to the paint in cleaning and sealing the tank.
