I am struggling with a decision.

I purchased a rack/sissy bar for my XJ650. It is supposed to be made for an XJ750, but the mounting holes just don't match up for either.

So, I am faced with a minor quandry. To make it fit will require physical alteration of the grab bar - specigically - drilling two holes in the side of it near the top of the upward slope.

Am I an idiot for hesitating or wise about being cautious about drilling a hole there?

And do I go ahead and drill or dose someone else have some better ideas?

I'd say go ahead and drill them too -- you can almost always pick up new grab-rails on Ebay for pretty cheap.

Perspective helps. I thought those foot rests were a decorative chrome side piece mounted vertically.

Bags are 12H 15L 7W the biggest I could put on her.

Floorboards are aftermarkets that bolt in. They don't flip up 'cause they rest just a hair above the exhaust, but I'd never flip them up anyways.
(hopefully get her cleaned and some new pics of what she's like now).

The Backrest is off of I don't know, but I drilled 2 Holes per side and bolted it on. Once again it's tiny holes and grab bars are dime a dozen. So drill the holes and mount it. Do have another bar that has a rack on the back, thinking of changing it, but the Ol' lday loves the layback of the bar on it now. We'll see how it goes.

It was going on either way. I was wrestling between drilling or coming up with some sort of bracket. Drilling would provide the most secure attachment, but at the same time, I am always hesitant to make permanent alterations to things.

I hesitated for 2 weeks before just saying screw it and drilled it. I'm the same way, hate altering something for the off chance I don't like or decide to get rid of. but something that can be found and replaced easy enough, I just went for it.
