It makes sense, hearing it, but it was just one of those questions that popped into my mind. I'd have made a good detective ...

You seem hesitant to share the location of the bike. I am not suggesting you give an address, but if you give the city, may well find someone here able to assist you and you can discuss details by private message or email. Just my two pence.

    Good call.
The bike is in the Portland area. Seemingly the area of the city where people dont seem to steal things. My first night in town I got a little distracted and left the keys in the ignition on one of the main arteries into the city.

    Well, ... Good luck!

I hope your plan for recovery and repairs works-out.

(Note: Look on Ebay. A GREAT many of the Yam-Shafties actually SHARE the same U-Joint.)

    85 Max-X = 31A-46180-00-00 CROSS JOINT
    83 Maxim = 4H7-46180-00-00 CROSS JOINT

    RickCo,
You're right. Thats why it took me so long to find the part. Every time I came across a Maxim X U-joint, they wanted at least $300 for it. This one came off a smaller XJ with the same part number for $40!
I'll try to post some pictures of my attempt, or failure. It seems like its a relatively uncommon problem but someone else has to run into it at some point.
Thanks for the advice. (And the heckling...)

Yep, hope the fix goes well. Sounds like you have stories to tell.

If you end up going it alone, there is a link in one of the posts to an on-line service manual. I think is is for the regular XJ700 and not the X, but it should help. Read all you can and print some pages to take with you.

Ummm......the u-joint for the 700's are the same as the XJ900 u-joints, and no others. The others are smaller, they will not physically fit the larger driveshaft in the X models, and no, the smaller driveshafts won't fit in places of the larger 700/900 driveshaft!

portland? oregon, maine, michigan lol there's alot of them. I assume you mean OR. as thats the most referred to. beautiful scenery out there I spent a week out there a few years back and took walk from tigerd(sp)? to portland man I would love to live in a place like that. Heck I would settle for another week to ride the bike in that area.

I assumed Oregon as not many people would choose to be on a Motorcycle in Michigan or Maine in February ...

Just got back, saw this post. Are you sure that you have the right U joint? If you're in the Portland area, I'd be willing to go out and lend a hand if you need one. Of course it depends on the day and time. Send me a PM.

    Well,
To be honest I'm not completely sure that I have the right joint. I bought one off of an XJ700. The TwoBrothersHonda parts list give the same number for the cross joints on an XJ700 as they do for the XJ700X, prompting me to purchase it. Luckily it wasnt too expensive, but I cant find any other parts lists to confirm this info. I know its on this site, I just cant find it again...

If it came off of any 700 model (X or non-X) then you are golden........
