I've been having a little trouble with clutch drag lately which cable adjustment wouldn't fix. So I pulled the clutch assembly off today and did something silly. The final plain plate is held in by a retaining wire and since the rest of the plates weren't warped or damaged I decided to check the last plate. When removing the wire retainer I broke it. So question #1 is how important is this retainer and can I live without it? Then I pulled another silly. Behind that final plate is a diaphram spring and I took it out and didn't pay attention to how it sat. Question #2 is should it fit so the inner or outer edge is against that last plate. Any help is appreciated.

That looks very similar. Looks like the outer edge of the spring is against the plate. Thanks

The posted diagram is from an 1100; your 650's clutch is quite a bit simpler, but Len is absolutely correct.

You need the retainer. Don't put it back together without it.

Is there a blow up pic anywhere like that for a 650 maxim?
