I want to add a accessory outlet to my bike, and would use it to charge a cell phone or run a gps. Has any one done this and have pics? Would you hook up directly to batt. and use a inline fuse or what?

That would work, if you tie into a 10 amp fuse, you risk blowing that circuit if you overload it. Run a 20 amp fuse right off the battery + .

I have a trip planned in June that will cover 1000 miles in 3 days and i wanted to be able to re-charge my cell phone for sure. We will be tenting it at state parks and there may be no outlets.

Good option. I have a wire end attached to the batt. for my motorcycle charger now. I have it just sticking out from the cover where you can barley see it. Maybe i can rig up a end to the lighter plug to use on the end for the charger. Thanks polock, i did not think of that before your post.

I have a cigarette lighter on my bike. I used 12v relay hooked to the battery and triggered by the switch, so nothing is left on when I shut the engine off. You should be able to find an outlet (without the lighter in it) at most auto stores.

By the way, is listening to MP3 player with earphones in while ridding illegal? I would think so just like it is for a vehicle. Some of my friends with harley never ride on trips without them. There bikes are loud and they they like the music over the noise.

If your wearing a helmet, I don't think there's a problem with wearing the ear plugs. You just have to be sure you're able to hear sirens, etc. incase of an emergency.

In Washington state, wearing ear buds is illegal. Helmet speakers are not. That's what I have.

I had a marine-grade 12v outlet that I got from a boat store in the chain hole on my Seca. I made a little plate that fit in there and attached it with a 20A inline fuse. It worked great.

I dunno if earbuds are illegal in my state, but I ride with earplugs in most of the time anyway, and I don't see much difference except that one has music from the engine and the other has music of a more traditional sort.

On my Vstar I drilled a hole and installed cig lighter in it. Actuallually I could do it on the left cover on my Seca since I no longer have the chain.

It's the hole on the left side of a Seca where the security chain used to be but no longer is. Essentially useless until you put a 12v outlet in it. :)

Many of us still have the chain in the chain hole. Why, what else are you going to put in a chain hole.

In FL buds are illegal, helmet speakers not.

I bought a dual weather resistant 12v plug that I wired directly to the water with an inline fuse.

I went with a 10 amp fuse as I didn't want to run the risk of over-running the electrical.

I got the outlet at one of the auto parts stores.

Now, you have to make sure that whatever gets plugged-in to the 12V Outlet does not overload the Electrical System and burn-out components parts that cannot handle high amperages.

The Electrical systems on the XJ-Serise Bikes are designes to Charge the Battery and run the Stock Lighting ... there isn't much more power to spare.
