Jacking the bike

I just bought a 82 XJ750 Seca, My question. Can I put a bike jack under it to jack it up. Will the exhust support the bike weight.

 

No, don't jack the bike up using the exhaust system!! What's wrong with the center stand?

 

I believe the head bearings are shot and it would be easier to jack up the bike to work on.

 

It's nearly balanced on the center stand. Put it on the center stand then jack under the front just enough to touch the rear wheel down.

Once you pull the front wheel off you should have enough room to extract the forks.

 

Hmmmm..The forks have to come off?? I thought I could take the whole assembly off at one time.

 

would jacking up on the oil filter cover cause the bolt to bend and the oil filter to leak? it's such a tempting place to put a jack that i believe the PO may have jacked it up here causing my oil filter cover to leak.

 

WOW!! I am a newbie and even I know jacking from the oil filter is a NO NO

 

Motavator, you're going to have to remove the wheel. You should be able to leave the forks in the bottom of the tree.

If you pull the tank you should be able to pull the top off the tree and lay the bars, cluster and headlamp back along the spine (some disconnection required). Then you can pull the lower tree and forks out, leaving the forks in the lower tree. I don't see any way you'll be able to do it without removing the wheel- life will be easier with it off anyhow.

I can't imagine the oil filter bypass bolt being bent by jacking. More likely the o-ring is just shot.

 

Its way easier to pull the forks...

I would say your right on the bolt.(very large bolt) but the filter caseing is only alum cast and can crack very easy under pressure or dropped.

 

I had my daughter sit on the pillion seat and slipped car stands under along the frame rails so it would be secure.On the centre stand.
Definite no to exhaust and oil filter.

 

What I did was this:

Put bike on center stand. Ready speed-jack.

Lift front forks. While holding front forks up, raise jack to oil filter housing.

Set jack stands under case guards and slowly lower jack until case guards are holding bike and oil filter is free.

Obviously, this only works if you have case guards/crash bars. But they're hooked into the motor mounts, and seem to support the weight just fine.

 

I don't know about everybody else, but my bikes frame has a horizontal member running just above the oil filter box. It was very easy to push the rear down and have an assistant place a standard jack STAND under the bar without touching the oil case at all. Then the bike is in the air far enough to get the wheel off, etc.

Am I the only one with this obvious support point?

 

My 650 has the same cross member as yours KT, I use a bottle jack to jack mine front end up. soen't require a helper.

 

Yea, a bottle jack would work well as long as it has a scooped top to it for the bar to nestle down into. Otherwise, I would think to easy to fall off. (that's why I like the stand and I don't have a bottle jack)
