I have a 82 650 maxim that is giving me a lot of greaf. Most times it would fire up right off the bat and stall 5 seconds later, and would refuse to start for a while. It would not fire at all with the choke on. I had a friend that is a mechanic clean the carbs and install new needles and seats, before I even tried it. With a lot of trying and a fully charged battery it would finally fire up and stay running, and it ran great. The starter is finally done, and I have a new one on the way. What should I be looking at while I wait for my starter? The bike runs great, but the cold starting sucks, and by the way after it is wormed up it started just fine.

    Snow,
Sorry to say but it sounds like your friend missed one important cleaning aspect of those carbs. The float bowls have small jets in the bottom that feed fuel up to the enrichment valves on top of the carbs. The carbs will need to come back off and the bowls will need to be checked and the brass tubes that go into the wells where the jets are will need to be cleaned as well.

Jets in the bowl for sure.

Also your starter may not be shot - it probably just needs brushes. Don't chuck it - if you want to toss it I'll pay shipping to get it and rebuild it as a spare.

Can you return the new starter if you can fix the current one? Will save you some bucks...
