I have a chance to get a free Maxim (at least I think that's what it is). Here's what I DO know about the bike:

    -It's definitely a Yamaha!
    -Four cylinder, YICS engine
    -shaft drive
    -dual front discs, rear drum
    -square gauge panel and headlight
    -good fenders
    -alloy wheels, pretty decent tires
-electrical seems to be all there

    -No title
    -no seat
    -no carbs
    -no shift lever

Is the bike worth getting? Is there any demand for the parts from a bike like this? No pics right now....camera's busted, but I'm working on getting pics.
If I get it, would you guys be interested in some cheap parts? Or is there an ebay market for XJ stuff?

You can always part out a bike - for free anything you get for the parts is profit baring your time. I would take a free bike pretty much regardless of condition ( I wouldn't take a totally trashed bike but they are mostly in scrap yards).

is it a maxim or a seca? i though maxims were all round headlights and gauges... maybe I'm just mistaken. look between the two middle headers about four inches above the oil filter and you will see the size stamped in the engine case, also post the vin and we have secret formulas to find out exactly what kind of bike it is. If its a rarer bike there would be a lot of interest in parts I'm sure.

If it had a title, it might even be a decent cafe or bobber project for that price. It would depend on what the inside of the motor looks like. I'd try a title search first, though.

Keep in mind it could have back registration and other fees due when you take it in to register it.

I got my maxim for 'free' but had to pay 350 @ the dmv for fines... turned out to be an okay deal but it depends on the shape of the bike... The fees will transfer over to the new owner (at least in california) which can make for a bad surprise and lots of ramen for meals in the future.

We don't have back fees here in SC, but I'm not interested in registering it anyway.
I'm more familiar with the XS650's. Is there a way to turn the motor over by hand on this bike? I'm assuming I can remove a side cover somewhere and put a wrench on it, right?

I'll be going back up there soon (it's at a shop where I'm getting my tank and fender painted) and I'll try to get the VIN, cc's and some pics.

Left side cover gives you access to turn it by hand. But if it has been sitting a long time it may not turn - does not mean its toast, could be gummed up.

I suspect it is an XJ750 Maxim. It fits the description of the '82 that I am parting out.

If it is, I have a seat and shift lever. Carbs could be gotten for about $75 off of fleabay - but you will have to clean, clean, clean them and replace some seals ...

Title depends upon your state. Some will let you get title with a bill of sale (obviously signed, preferably witnessed and notarized), some have a procedure to go through to document attempts to contact "current" title holder ... Sometimes you can register it as a "salvage" bike by showing the receipts for the work/parts used to put it back on the road.

Your best bet is to contact BMV. Definitely get it, if all you have to do is get those parts and clean it up/replace fluids then you have made out extremely well. A working bike would be worth at least $700-$800. It won't cost that much in parts.

Worst case? You make an easy $4-$5 hundred dollars parting it out.
