I saw that someone mentioned they had tightened their cam chain tension. If the tension is loose, would you be able to hear it while the motor is at a lower rpm (not highway speeds). Sometimes when I am putzing around slowly on back streets, I hear something that sounds like the chain maybe rattling or hitting the valve cover or something like that. I'm getting ready to check valve shim clearances - could I check cam chain tension at the same time?

my bike is doing the exact same thing it is driving me nuts! you have the exact same bike as me. the j model bike is the only model made that year that has the automatic tensioner. please let me know what you did to fix it when you do fix it. also to make sure we are talking about the same thing could you describe the noise you are hearing as a tingling sound?

Yes - you can check the tension while you are in there.

I have recently started hearing a very very faint tick that matches RPM, between 1500-2000. Not sure if that's it or not, but I've really been pushing it lately. Might be time to try out that semi-auto tensioner.

Remove the left side cover & turn the large nut ccw, loosen the locknut (red) turn the large nut sharply cw & tap the adjuster housing (blue) with a screwdriver handle, tighten lock nut.

I assume this will work with an XJ 650 G as well?

    Yes.

Don't over-tighten the adjuster though, it's just a few foot pounds. Over-tightening will bend the unit internally, and it may never adjust cam chain tension again!

By the way, I have replacemetn automatic tensioners available for the manual ones, so you won't ever have to adjust it again!
