OK guys here is where I am at. XJ750 seca. Bike will only start in neutral when the neutral light is on and only when the kick is up. Put the kick down and no go it will turn over but no start.
Does not start when you hold in the clutch in gear.
Just bought this bike not long ago so I am now finding out the problems. Short of testing every thing on the bike to find the problem I thought I would throw this out there maybe someone could give me a point to start.

Al if it's running and you put the kick down while in neutral does it quit running?

Have you checked if you have spark when it won't start? Obviously you have fuel since it runs with the kick up.

I would start there. I suspect you won't see spark. We can work back from there

the bike has to be in neutral to start. you do not have the hold the clutch in to start it. kickstand has button that presses in when you put the kickstand down and if the bike is running in gear it will cut off. there is nothing wrong with the bike as far as the starting procedure goes.

Naw... these bikes should be able to start in the following conditions. In Neutral with stand up or down. In gear with stand up and clutch in. There are swithches that sense the postion of the stand and clutch. If either of these are bad, then the thing won't start.

Not only won't start won't turn over at all. Al is seeing turn over when he should but no ignition.

If the bike is in neutral and you put the kick down it shuts down.
You are correct, the bike will turn over with the kick down/Gets Fuel/No spark to start But turns over.
It appears there are to many things that do not work to have each item go bad. The one thing I see that has most of them in common is the Diode block, What do you think.

The safety relay cuts off the starter so we have to assume it is functional. It would be good to verify it. Place the bike in gear, clutch in, kick up and it should turn over (which you already reported is the case), Kick down it should not even turn over. That verifies your relay at least.

The diode block is the common element and could be bad. Not sure how that kills your spark.
Do you know how to test the block? If not I can post up some instructions

Relay between the side stand and TCI? That would kill the spark but not the turn over, yes? Two relays affected by the switch I believe. One controls the starter and the other the TCI.

OK, Bike in gear/Kick up or down/Clutch in/ does not turn over. The clutch switch does nothing, as if it was not even there.
The engine will not start any shape or form with the kick down, But will turn over.
Beginning to feel like who's on first who's on second lol.

next to the RR and TCI there is a 4 wire plug hanging there with nothing on it, someone has a jumper on two of the prongs for the headlight to work with the key, Take off the jumper and no headlights.

Headlight is supposed to come on once the bike starts to run...

Sounds like you are the lucky recipient of a hacked harness, like my SECA. If it's too hacked (like mine) then it's probably time to just pick a functioning uncut one from ebay.

Otherwise you are going to have to test everything really.

The 4 wire plug has these colors attached.

    1- White/Blue strip
    2- Red/Yellow stip
    3- Blue/Black stip
    4- Black

Appears there is some sort of relay missing tied to the headlight. It is hard to troublshoot a problem when there are missing parts.

With the jumper on the plug the lights come on when you start the bike, It appears the headlight relay is missing. Now I do not know if this is the case if it has anything to do with my other problems. The bike looks and runs great, I did buy it for a project bike lol.

Yup that is the headlight relay - not your issue. It is fine to have it jumped.

Al if you have a few minutes I can PM you my # and we can talk through it. I think we can narrow it down fairly quick....

For those of you following along - while I can remember I'll doc what Al and I talked about.

in neutral and kick up the bike starts. (normal)
in neutral and kick down - turns over but does not start (should start problem #1)

in gear clutch in - kick down does not turn over (normal)
in gear clutch in - kick up does not turn over (should start problem #2)

There are 2 circuits the side stand relay controls power to the TCI and the start cutoff that controls the starter.

The side stand relay (and therefore TCI) is energized by either the neutral switch or the kick switch closed ( kick up).
    o
The starter relay needs neutral or clutch in and kick up.

So for Problem #1 the start cutoff relay is fine - it turns over in both cases but the TCI cuts out if the kick is down, The circuit should be energized by the neutral switch so he either has a loose wire in that circuit or the diode is bad.

For Problem 2 we know the kick switch works so that leaves the clutch switch not working or loose wire again.

Al is going to investigate further.

OK, are you all ready for this one. The diode is missing in the bucket. Before I started trouble shooting my problems I did get into the light bucket and while organizing all them wires with a wire tie I did notice a empty plug, well a lot of bikes have a accessory plug in there so I assumed ( we all know where that gets you) that that's what it was (WRONG) it was the plug for the diode. Now I understand why there where so many ways where the bike would not start. Well needless to say there was no sense to check the clutch switch until I put in a new diode.
    Len here we come LOL.
    Just a note
I did check the color codes on the empty plug and it does correspond with the diode.

Now that's funny Al - good catch. So is it a single diode or a diode block?

Morning Bill, Seeing as the clutch switch goes into the diode block I didn't bother to check it until I get the new diode block from Len. I could have checked the switch for continuity to see if it was faulty but I just thought I would wait and do it all together.

!!!UPDATE!!!! WOW I gotta tell ya this bike is full of surprises. I received the parts from Chacal today, Very fast shipping I got the parts in 3 days. Great work Len. OK I put in the diode block that was missing, turned the bike on put up the kick stand, put the bike in gear pulled in the clutch, hit the starter and no go, Damn I said what the hell could it be now. So I decided to check the clutch switch. Damn again there isn't one SHIT. I know I bought this for a project but Jeez need a break here LOL. The only good thing ( see I can be Optimistic about this ) is every thing seems to be working once I get the clutch switch, so for now I just tied the wires together so to start the bike in gear, just need to be careful. OK till we meet again.

Just a quick note Bill, I did not notice the clutch switch was missing until I took off the plastic cover on the handle bar.

I was gonna ask about that - mine is exposed. I would be looking to see what else has been hacked too. Apparently there was a very inventive PO in the owner string.
