Hello, 1985 Maxim X 29,000 mi., It starts cold ok using the choke on for only 20 to 30 seconds..Idles great when the motor is cold. I can ride stop and go traffic and it idles fine until the motor temp comes up to normal.. It runs great but when I stop with the motor warm it ides somewhat erratic, I have to give it throttle or i feel it is going to die..I am not very mechanical inclined, I had the carb cleaned and sync. performed 5,000 miles ago and it has ran and started good. Until this problem started gradually about 6 or 700 miles back..any help appreciated thanks Don T.

That could be a petcock problem, try running on prime.

Funny thing -- mine was doing that today when I rode 20-something miles one way to go through an aircraft carrier museum. Thing was, on the previous tank of gas, it wasn't doing this.

Sounds like you may need to return your idle mix with the bike warm but Wizard is also on a good point. There have been several cases reported of the petcock acting strange when warmed up.

Also check your throttle shaft seals or for any other vacuum leaks. Mine had funny idle characteristics, and the throttle shaft seals were shot.

Almost sounds like it's running rich. (Runs good cold, bad when warm) What do the plugs say?

Could be a float needle that's leaking. Plugs would show this as being rich.

    Good place to start.

Thanks for all replies, I will check or try to check each thing you all have told me..Although I am not a good mechanic..I bought a thin walled 18mm socket that I think will fit on the plugs, but I am having great difficulty removing the plug wires..do they just pull off or there some other way to get them off? thanks for anymore help ayone can over.. thanks

Vacuum leaks are an easy check. Take an unlit propane torch and run it around the intake manifolds and throttle shafts listening for a change in idle. If you don't have a propane torch, you can spray starter fluid, but make sure the engine is not hot. Using starter fluid is more dangerous because of the flash point, so be careful if you do that.

Plug wires should just pull off.

    dont,

If your 18mm socket doesn't work there are plenty of verified ones that will listed at www.maxim-x.com. This of course assumes you don't have the plug tool that came with the Maxim-X tool kit.

With respect to the plug wires, the inner wires are next to impossible to remove unless you take the tank off. There's just not enough room to get your hands in. Also, the plugs are set so deep that getting a handle on the inner plugs is difficult unless it's from directly above.

The Maxim-X plug wires also have a rubber gasket (or at least there should be one) at the end of each cap that seals the recess from moisture. When you pull on the plug caps it sort of creates a small suction requiring you give them a small tug.

No. There should be a bolt at the end under the seat. Just remove it, lift up the back and slide the tank out. Make sure to disconnect the fuel line, vacuum line, and fuel light sensor.

As Joe says definitely don't forget the fuel light sensor. I can't count how many times I've forgotten it and lifted the tank slightly only to feel it tug. If you forget, it can surprise you and throw off your balance given your handling a tank that probably has some gas sloshing around in it.

Also, when you reconnect the fuel sensor, add some dielectric (aka bulb) grease to the connection for good measure. It makes it easier to disconnect next time round.
