    Hi all,

I just bought Maxim X, as an prvious owner FZ750, i knew the engine had a particular thing.

but i have a big big problem, this bike did not start when it's cold outside, so i need to boost and with a combination of choke and trottle, he finaly start and after the engine is hot no problem at all the engine idle fine.

I have clean the carb, remove main and pilot jet, the needle jet, float etc...
and it is maybye little better but still don't start when cold.

I would pprciated any help to solve this problem..

Thank's very much and nice day to every body... From Quebec city 8)

    mbob,
When you cleaned your carbs out did you check the fuel level in the float bowls when you reinstalled them? My xj650 was starting hard so I checked me fuel level. It was about 8mm low in all 4 carbs adjusted fuel level to 1mm from carb body and presto starts right up cold with some choke. Also started running a little richer which is a good thing cause its been running lean.
    good luck mbob :D

    Ho lowlifexj

Thank's for the input, i'm not sure how to set the float, i think' that the float height is set a 17.5 mm, but where i thake the measurement from the base of the carb to the float and is it when the float close the input fuel ?

    Thank's

My maxim x is very, very cold natured. I have to use ether in the winter to get her to go. My father's x is the same way. Could just be nature of some of the beasts.

The xs are cold natured. Check you float level using a clear tube to see the level in relation to the gasket line. But the most common issue is the "choke" jet being clogged ( all our chokes are enrichment circuits).

Cleaning this jet is vital. It needs to be absolutely clear

My Maxim-X 700 is also warm-blooded ... it can take some patience to start in the cold particularly if I've let it set more than week. Over time I've learned the right combination of throttle and choke to get it started in 3-5 tries but I'm certain I've never tried to start it in as cold a weather as you have in Quebec.

One other problem. The stock ignition coils on the Maxim-X's have a history of developing hairline cracks over time. If it's cold and damp you could have a nearly impossible time getting it started.

Check out the following web site for additional Maxim-X details. The owner is a fellow Canadian as yourself.

    Hey Bob,

You should definitely think about upgrading to aftermarket coils. The Dyna DC1-1 are a tight squeeze, but they fit and improve cold starting. You might also want to consider attending one of the upcoming carb clinics. None that I know of in Quebec City, but there's one in the Maritimes coming up this weekend and another in Huntsville, On on the second weekend of June.

+1 for Artie, btw. Lots and lots of good info at maxim-x.com.

    Hi MaximumX,

Wow !! If the clinic was at Quebec i will be glad to assist :) but for now My X stiil does't start after adjust the float height

Still spend 2 hours yesterday and still the same thing, i've talk to the dealer aand he said that maybye the engine valve must be adjust, i will be very surprised becauze once the engine is warm the engine works very fine.

So yesterday he does't start, and this morning i give a try, i pull the choke and the engine want to start at the first click on button and nothing after :(

Buttttt !!! I remember that the choke circuit was on different chamber and maybye this circuit begin to be plug and doe's not supply enought fuel when cold ???? That's may explain why the engine wnat to start this mornig !!!

    Is it make sense ???????????

So dont't worry be happy and if you have any suggestion let me know !!!

    Thank's and have a nice day !!!!

If you can get it running when it's warm, do a hard Seafoam treatment. Running that stuff through the carbs can do wonders. Or just remove the bowls and double check the enrichment circuit to make sure it's not blocked. That way, at least you don't have to pull the whole rack.

    Great MaximumX

I see that you own a Seca 900, is the 900 more powerfull than the X and how is the handling on 900.

I ask you because i was lookin for an 900 before the X ..

    Thank's

I just bought the 900 two weeks and got it home a few days ago. It isn't insured or licensed yet, so I've only ridden it up and down the street a few times after some tuning and tweaking in the last couple of days. So far, it feels great! Really smooth, even power delivery and it's got a nice sound to it.

Of course, that's compared to my X which is a little loud and twitchy with its 4-1 and pod filters. The X has some other non-stock features too, like a lowered rear and a 130/90-16 in front.

    Wow MaximumX

Really cool your X, the muffler is a nice touch !!

I feel that the 16" inches front wheels improve the handling, i remark that the front 19" wheel shim when i wnt to run fast, and that's the fisrt thing i would like that test on it

    Hi everyone,

I clean the choke circuit, check adn recheck all the card and everything is O.K., i replace spark plug by brand new and still no start.

I must use quick start and after several try finaly start and i must hold the trottle full open one or two minutes and after the engine run freely !!!

Hmmm.... I dunno. Maybe check your coils too?

As Artie mentioned, if they're original, they probably have some pretty deep cracking in the cover. It's possible that some cool-morning condensation is getting in there and contributing the hard-start issue.

    Thank's MaximumX

It's will be my next step the coil, i hate to think that's this problem may come from valve adjuustment, but i had check a the spark fire O.K. but i can't tell if the spark is enougt strong.

Do'es somebody know if i can use a set of coil from another bike like FZ750 ?????

    Thank's and have a nice day !!!

Mine starts great dwon to 30*F no problem I rarely ride any colder than that. I from from when there isn't ice on the roads till they start to ice up again. set the choke to 1/2 to 3/4 and tap the button. Now do'nt try to take off right away cause it won't run worth crap but give er' 3-4 minutes and you are good to go.

With respect to the ignition coils, there's a couple of things you can try.

1.) Remove them and after ensuring they are very dry (so you don't seal in any moisture) coat them in plasti-dip to waterproof them.

2.) If 1.) doesn't work the best coil replacement is to use Dyna coils (the exact Dyna coil part number escapes me at the momemt). Forum member chacal has a kit for replacing them and can give you much more timely advice than me. If you search you can also find some threads that discuss the dyna coils.

    Hi all

    It's me again

I've check the coil and they all great, but now i know why this thing do not start when cold, all the intake valves are out of specs they are too tights so i can't figure what will be the shims i will use to replace, what i'll do ???

Do i assume that all the intake have 0 clearance ??

One thing for sure the X is too funny to leave it like that, i can't wait to try with the proper clearances

Thank's for your helps it's a very helpfull forum :)
