First of all, thanks for the great advice. My throttle cable was the problem. I've replaced the cable and she starts great. Now I can't seem to get my baby to idle right. I pulled out the pilot jets and cleaned them and set them 1 1/2 turns, as per my shop manual. I can get her to idle at 2000 rpm or 1000rpm, but I can't find that 1100 to 1500 rpm sweet spot. She would run at 1050 +/- before I cleaned the pilot jets. Should I tweak the pilot jets a bit or do you guys have any other ideas? Thanx again.

umm the pilot jets are not adjustable they are in the carb bowls and may be partially plugged giving you problems. You must have pulled the idle mixture screws out and cleaned them. Not a bad thing but you missed a whole lot of passages unless you removed the carbs from the bike and cleaned everything inside and out. Did you count how many turns out they were before you started? The 1 1/2 is a starting point from which you will need to fine tune each cylinder to get things right. Mine were all over the place the settings may not be identical in turns. Check your plugs on the light ones turn the screws out a dime width at a time. If you have dark plugs turn the screws in.

My mistake. I am talking about the idle mixture screws. I've already pulled out the carbs and cleaned them out. My idle mixture screws were all over the place as well.I'll follow your advice and keep you posted. Thanx

You do have the peices assembled in the correct order right? o-ring, washer, spring then screw. THe o-rings could also be hardened and since they were removed not sitting the same as they were. I have even seen where an o-ring got in there sideways and if you don't catch it you just smoosh it all up and then it won't flow at all. Did you do a bench sync when you had the carbs off and re-assembled from cleaning? You will also need to do a vacuum sync with the carbs on the bike and running after you disassemble and reassemble the carbs there really isn't any way around that.

Ihave not done a bench sync or a vacum sync. How do I do that? Right now the bike starts good and idels smooth. But she will not drop below 2500 rpm when the engine is warmed up. To be honest the bike has never ideled this smooth but she won't slow down. Iwould be happy to hear any and all comments suggestions or whatever. Thanx.

For the bench sync you have to pull them back off errrr..... Basically take about 1/4" strips of business card and set all the butterflies the same.

For the vaccum sync(on bike) you have to make or buy a rig to do it. THere are some good cheap setups to make on here. search two bottle sync. then you hook the vacuum line up to carbs 1 &2 and adjust to you have the same vacuum draw, then 3&4 then 1&3 and reset your idle. Bike needs to be at operating temp to do this. And it help to have a fan or two on high blowing air over the motor as to not everheat it. Rickcomatic has a good sync post I think as well as many others.

I had my carbs off 6 times before I got it right. I didnt follow directions from a post on here, If you think that your carbs are clean start over and do it again. I am now a expert on removing and installing carbs. I had the same problem. Idle was hihg and would hang. After I pulled them to clean. Well what fixed it, I am not sure because the last time I had the carbs off I decided to do a valve job which most valves where ony 1-2MM out of limits. , Plus the head gasket front left corner had a seep. So I replaced it, put it back togeahter and used silicone greese on the boots, started her up and within 3 seconds she was purring. I must have used 5 cans of cleaner, the bike sat for 13 years in a barn. But, she runs great, ready for the paint shop.. Good luck.
